Tips, Myths and Rips: A Physician’s Advice is a book that delivers exactly what's indicated in the title. The author, Morton E.Tavel, now a retired medical doctor, gives us a complete guide against what he calls “snake oil”, miraculous products and alternatives that will give you the results you desire with a minimal amount of effort. It’s also been reviewed by different experts in the medical field, who praise Tavel’s rigorous research when it comes to dispel mistaken preexisting notions about our well-being and how to successfully keep ourselves healthy.

The book is separated in three well differenced parts, with the first one being Tips. It gets us started with an introduction to America’s story with obesity as an epidemic phenomenon that just keeps on getting bigger. It also provides a charts that will help us calculate our BMI (Body Mass Index) while letting us know to which body group do we belong. After eliminating other methods for losing weight due to their inefficiency, we are left with dieting as our only realistic option. We are then given extremely useful and varied tips about which foods should we avoid and which ones will help us improve our health (all of it backed up with scientific research)

As for the second part, Myths, we embark into a well documented journey destined to shed light onto ideas that are widely spread throughout the general public. It does provide interesting and eclectic topics that are sure to spark your interest.

The last section, Tricks, focuses on debunking the aforementioned “snake oil”, alternative solutions and products that promise life-changing result with a minimal amount of effort and an inversion of our money. In other words, scams that have been thriving in the recent years thanks to social media and the growing influence of so-called “Health Authorities “, people without any kind of medical background who will use different stratagems to take gullible people’s money.

What makes this books such a pleasant read, and is as well my favourite thing about it as a whole, it’s the way it's structured, with its three clearly separated sections. Also, thanks to the index the reader can just read the chapters more relevant to him. The chapters also include a conclusion that briefly summarizes the content of the whole chapter. There aren’t any real major downsides to this book, the only thing that comes to mind is how much it focuses on America in comparison to other countries. But it is an easy read, full of information and extremely well written, all reasons why it gets all 4 out of 4 stars in this review. Any curious member of the general public will be able to enjoy it, thus reaching the author’s objective of arming people against the scams of today’s world.
