I was given the opportunity to read Who Told You That You Were Naked? By William E. Combs. This book depicts, in great detail, the story of Adam and Eve. The way this story is broken down in this book encourages you to use your critical thinking skills to understand just how sin came into this Earth (through the eating of the forbidden fruit.) The author continues through the story of Genesis, explaining the stories of the serpent and Adam’s brother, Cain, while giving us his analysis of these stories, encouraging us as readers to make our own. The author used excellent word choice and symbolism to better relate these biblical stories to us now.
I gave this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. This books, while at first glance seems to be written distinctly for Christians, is quite the opposite. As someone who has struggled in my faith, struggled to figure out if God is real, I can comfortably say that you can read this book with no ties to Christianity. The way the author goes about his analysis of these biblical stories and also gives us his own personal anecdotes throughout the ten chapters of this book, it makes it appealing to even the not religious.
This book is a spiritual read, not to be confused with religious, and allows you to develop your own interpretations on how sin was brought in this Earth and whether or not you think that our sins and transgressions can be forgiven. The way that Combs wrote this book encouraged for people to do their own thinking, and that is what makes this book so appealing to every audience whether it be religious, spiritual, intellectual, etc.
There were many things I loved about this book. Firstly, I would like to address how he provided the readers with textual evidence of the biblical stories that he shares to ensure that we could build our own analysis along with him. Secondly, I love his use of symbolism, word choice, focus, and analysis to better help us understand where sin came from, if we can be forgiven for our transgressions, and explaining to us the story of Cain. All of the little details that were added so precisely make this book an amazing read.
Very rarely have I read a book with no typos or errors, yet I read this book two times over, and found not a single typo. This book is extremely well written and edited, which is another reason I decided to rate this book so highly. I highly recommend this book for others to read. I had an amazing time reading this.
