“I am a poet behind bars because words made me commit crime.”

Walking in Blind, a collection of poetry is an intensely emotional book to add to your shelf. Artist and poet, Kaviru Samarawickrama takes her readers into a world of in-depth grief where a girl tries all the best she could to show to the world how strong she really is.

The book not only showcases a variety of creative poems but, it also portrays wonderful pieces of art which serve as a tool to express the emotion of each piece. It is composed of four parts with a different set of poems. It is well-arranged as shown in the Table of Contents.

The author used first person point of view which is a clever technique so the reader could easily relate with the singular story contained in each poem. Most of it provokes melancholy, depression, and anxiety yet thoughtful and sweet. “The cold tiles brushed against my skin, made me realize how cold my life is.”

I like that it starts with as strong, convincing us to use our words wisely because it is a weapon that could either hurt or save us. And I like that it ends positively with an optimistic view brought by the final content albeit I wish that the last set was composed all of the positive poems in contrast with the grief expressed on the prior items.

What I noticed about the writing style is that it’s informal. There were very long lines while some are too short. Also, the tone is not too powerful because there were no punctuations used and no rhymes which I think is essential to help bring more appeal to the audience. The positive side though is that it uses figurative speeches and the message are clear.

I recommend the book to women all over the globe because the reading journey will surely usher them into the true value of a relationship. Each piece contains a deeper meaning about the importance of an intact and healthy relationship with family, loved ones, and friends. I strongly suggest though that this book is not intended for depressed individuals because the material contains an extreme set of sad emotions. It might encourage them to self-blame or self-harm.

I give it 3 out of 4 stars because I think that the book needs a little polishing in order to connect with the audience more strongly. Yet, overall It is a good read!

I love poetry, but I've been having a big internal dilemma about my feelings for modern-day poetry in its informal, Tumblresque avatar. It confuses me and I try to enjoy it but can't/ I don't know if I'd read this book, but it's definitely on my radar now. Thanks for this review!
