Heartaches written by H.M. Irwing, is a fictional book that seems to be targeted at either adults or older teenagers. It’s a book with passion, sex, and mystery; the type that leads you to want a sequel.

The novel began with a great start, and I found myself quite captivated by the characters and their sadness throughout the prologue, which I felt set the tone to the rest of the story really well. A highlight was the third person point of view, as I believe it gives all readers the chance to interpret each character’s thoughts and intentions in a real way, and not just basing any conclusions on assumptions.

Although, a weaker aspect to the writing was the fact that there were such vague descriptions of the characteristics and physical attributes of the people in the story. I can’t speak for all readers, but I know I definitely would have both liked and appreciated a more in-depth telling of how Anna appeared to others, but also how she appeared to herself throughout her journey in the novel. Realistically, it was such a minor flaw to an otherwise great book, and if at times that flaw left me creating my own mental image of how the characters looked, then so be it. On another note, I was really grateful to have an insight into Rafe’s past; I am such a sucker for tragic backstories, and his was a good one that had me hanging off every word.

I read this entire book in one sitting, and I can honestly say that the first few chapters were so intriguing that I couldn’t tear my eyes away. I was diving head-first into Anna’s life and now that I’ve finished reading, I only have one regret; reading it all too quickly. The main concept was such an interesting one, and with really challenging plot-twists it left me wanting an explanation as to why Anna wouldn’t just tell her mother what was going on with Matt and his family. It was just something I didn’t understand.

I am more than happy to give this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars, as the content contained in the novel was both confronting and insightful. I have yet to read a perfect novel, and while great with an ending that left me wanting more, this book is no exception, and so that is why I will offer it this rating. I am thankful to say that I will be taking a bit of advice from this novel, a life lesson, of sorts; don’t trust everyone’s persona, it might be based on a lie.
