Fast and fun! This is how the book Code Name: Dodger Operation Rubber Soul by Eric Auxier hit me as I enjoyed the pleasant company of the young and resourceful Justin Reed as he skillfully skateboard his way through his mission of finding his father’s murderer. It’s an amazingly well edited YA spy novel packed with action and fun from the first page to the last. It delighted me so much that I give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.

The main character in this novel is Justin Reed who lost his parents very early in life. His mom drowned when he was only six and his dad was murdered a few years ago. More than anything, he is determined to catch his father’s murderer. Hanging out with his friend Randy from the orphanage, he learns many tricks that are helpful in the streets and that can get him closer to succeeding his mission. However his plans can sometimes also get him in trouble with the authorities and attract attention from people who do not want him any good.

When he meets Bob, a CIA agent, it’s a turnaround in his life and a lift to his mission. While he picks up more clues around the murder of his father, he also faces new enigmas including that of the unknown identity of the mysterious Pharaoh. Spending time with Bob and getting to know him soon brings him closer to his new-found father figure. But can he really trust him? Who is the Pharaoh?

While the story is fast-paced and full of actions, it is over and above that lots of fun. The author unfolds the story and paints the different characters in his book with such lively descriptions that each time I run into them from one page to another I have to smile or laugh out loud. Moreover, I appreciate that the story is not a very bloody one, although occasionally there are fights and use of guns. I am very sensitive about violence and the author did very well in making an exciting story without having recourse to overly descriptive bloody details. It is definitely not a book for those who are looking for a serious and bloody spy story.

As the book comes to an end, I felt this desire to continue on another exciting adventure with Justin and his friends! It is such a relief to know that this is possible by reading the next three missions after that of Operation Rubber Soul. I am looking forward to read mission 2: Cartel Kidnapping, Mission 3: Jihadi Hijacking, and mission 4: Yakuza Dynasty, all from the same author. This captivating story is definitely one that will work very well for a movie too. On top of that it will definitely charm those who like their spy-thrillers to be tinted with good humor and filled with many topsy-turvy mysteries to elucidate.
