Twisted Threads by Kaylin McFarren is the fourth book in the Threads series. The story centers on a Japanese assassin named Akira Hamada who works for Mitsui and is sent on a cruise to kill the murderer of his sister. The only problem is, she does not know who is the murderer. Upon boarding the Starfish, she meets the devilishly handsome Devon Lyon who could be the key to finding the murderer and fulfilling her duty, as long as Akira’s heart does not get in the way.

This book combines mystery, eroticism, romance, and suspense as Akira gets closer to Devon and finding the murderer. Although this book is fourth in the Threads series, I read it as a standalone and overall, I was able to follow the plot. I would, however, recommend reading the series as a whole because this would have allowed a deeper connection to the characters and I would image, a greater understanding of what Akira has been through working for Mitsui.

I went into this book believing there would be a mystery for me to solve along with the character, but found this to be an afterthought with the primary focus being the development of her relationship with Devon which seemed unrealistic in its presentation. This lack of focus on the core thread of the novel, her needing to kill the murderer, is what I disliked most regarding the plotline. However, I do feel that others who may pick up this book will find enjoyment if they are looking for a more direct focus on the romantic plotline.

What I liked most about this book were the moments of adventure and mystery that were sprinkled in among the moments of romance and wish there had been more. There were moments of great twists, but the excitement the reader felt from these moments did not carry throughout the book and I felt there were many chapters where the novel lost its traction. Additionally, I felt this book was very well-edited and the writing style flowed making it easy to comprehend what was happening in each moment.

Unfortunately, I did not find myself loving this book giving it a rating of 2 out of 4 stars. I thought the book sacrificed its mystery and suspense plot line to give in to moments of erotica and romance instead. Someone who had never read this book could open it to a random chapter and not even realize Akira is supposed to be an assassin or that there is an ounce of mystery. As this was the case, the book did not allow itself to be clearly defined as mystery or erotica instead giving it the feeling of having an identity crisis resulting in my removal of two stars from the rating.

As this is the case, I would not recommend this book to anyone who is a serious mystery buff or enjoys getting fully engrossed in solving the case. Instead, I would only suggest this book to someone who wants a light, feel good romantic read with a bit of mystery sprinkled in here and there.
