Who Told You That You Were Naked is an insightful read on the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. It is a non-fiction novel written by William Combs, a retired Presbyterian minister. The book starts with the author narrating the moment in his life that he becomes enlightened and thus made him start a relationship with God. It recounts the story of the creation and the fall of man. God created Adam and placed him in the Garden of Eden where he was in charge of all the other creatures. He was ordered to eat from every tree except the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil but Eve was tricked by the serpent and they disobeyed God’s command. God got angry and chased them from the Garden.
The author uses scriptures from the Bible and cited texts to explain the importance of the Garden of Eden and eating of the forbidden fruit. It greatly expounds on the effects of disobedience, God’s anger, and His forgiveness. Although Adam and Eve sinned, God does not entirely abandon them. He gives them another land to cultivate but there they must toil to get food.
I really liked that the book changes the human perception of sin. The reevaluation of Adam and Eve’s disobedience does not make out humans as evildoers but as children of God who are deceived by worldly factors. It gives humans a chance to seek redemption through grace and faith. The personal testimonies made by Combs throughout were very engaging. The author used his words very skillfully to pass across the word of God. His passion for theology cannot be questioned.
The book's organization was also pleasant. It has ten chapters and after each chapter, there is a review of the main points of the chapter together with some discussion questions. These elements allow you to reflect on the main ideas in the book.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Although it was captivating, sometimes I found it difficult to distinguish between the author’s work and the cited texts. Generally, the book is readable. I did not encounter any flaws. I recommend this book to both Christians and non-Christians. It has great insight into religion. However, read this book in a group. It can get quite boring when you read it alone. All in all, I really enjoyed this book.
