McDowell by William H. Coles is a gripping novel that follows the life of an extremely wealthy surgeon from Denver, Colorado. The reader is thrown into the life of Hiram McDowell, a surgeon who travels the world doing "good" with his wealth and the funds from various donors. His story quickly evolves from a climb on the Himalayas in Nepal in 1981, to his life with his third wife in Denver, Colorado.

After establishing Hiram's family life and the confusion, and kids, that come with three marriages, Coles leads you into the more complex and secretive aspects of his life and career. Through discrepancies found in a lab Hiram has supervision over, a journalist, Paige Sterling, begins to uncover darker secrets from his past as well as current lies. As a founder of the main hospital in third world Nepal, Hiram spends most of his life traveling between countries, ignoring his children, and climbing mountains. Paige sets out to uncover the secrets of his life between his family, abusing money and his medical career. After his professional life is put on blast by the media, family issues end up placing him in prison and then shortly after, on the run. Through years of evading police and an absolute change in lifestyle, he slowly begins to see who he really is and why his misfortunes in life played out.

Overall, I thought this was a great book that held onto the readers attention by placing unexpected twists and turns throughout, as well as changing perspectives from character to character. After much though and indecisiveness, I gave this book a 3 out of 4. I so badly wanted to give Coles a full four but the grammatical errors caused me to resort to a three. Between the story line and the way in which the author smoothly transitions the story between characters, I was very engaged throughout the entire book.

Lastly, I believe this book would appeal to many different types of readers. It was not too lengthy to leave a potential reader bored, but just long enough to answer all major questions without leaving too many loose ends. The only concern I have for readers would be the very few graphic scenes. Rarely there is a questionable instance where a young reader wouldn't be suitable but a mature teenager and older would do well. After taking the whole novel in, I believe this book would be great for readers who have a love for fictitious tales but not for the young reader in the family.

William H. Coles did an amazing job writing McDowell. He really draws the reader into Hiram's crazy life and gets the reader invested in how his life turns out. Coles keeps you on your toes and doesn't let up. A very well written fictitious novel about a surgeon who's life get turned upside down.
