Escape by Belle Ami, which is a pen name for Tema Merback is a romantic thriller about Layla Wallace and Cyrus Hassani. The story begins with Cyrus on a mission with the Iranian government to deliver a nuclear laser to a secret facility. Even though the mission is complete there are some bombs in the road which cause him to safe one of his officer’s lives. He also reports to his father like figure Jalal who has taken him under his wing since he became an orphan while he was studying in Paris. We also learn the cruel conditions of prisoners who are believed to be spies even though Cyrus tries to stop it so that the agreements between countries are not broken.

On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean Layla is finishing up finals in snowy Harvard with her boyfriend Zamir and excited to be going to Dubai all expenses paid since Zamir is from a rich family. Her father, however, does not want her to go since she is Jewish and he is Muslim, believing that his family will not accept her. Despite his advice she goes to Dubai and find out her father was correct about the parents. After an argument she goes to talk to Zamir and finds him passes out in the middle of a kidnapping attempt, since she walked in the kidnappers also take her.

I rated Escape a 4 out of 4 because I loved the second half of the book so much! I will warn you that the beginning of the story was slow. However, I understand why the author gave us so much background story and took the time to explain things that are part of the Iranian culture, but most readers may not know. Another thing I did not like about the book was that the author switches the point of view of the story without much warning so you have to pay attention. This is not a book that you can just breeze though.

Belle Ami kept me on my toes and any attempt I made at guessing what would happen next was proved incorrect which I loved. Also she made me want to pull out a map so I could follow what roads the main characters were taking through out their journey. My favorite thing about the book though was that the story did not end abruptly but rather continued on to a very satisfying ending.

I am excited to look into her other books and would recommend this one. Just keep in mind that once the story really gets going you will not want to put it down!
