Escape by Belle Ami is a romantic thriller featuring a Harvard student Layla Rose Wallace who blinded by love travels to Saudi Arabia with her Saudi boyfriend Zamir. This is despite warnings from her father of the dangers of being in the Middle East at the time. The two love birds are kidnapped at their hotel and taken to Tehran, Iran. Zamir is ransomed by his wealthy father but Layla is left on her own. Despite her kidnapping being by mistake, there are suspicions that she is a person of interest and the Iranians hesitate in realising her. Cyrus Hassani a deep-cover Mossad agent is mandated by the Iranians to keep watch over Layla. Her farther Dr. Wallace, a nuclear physicist knows what is at stake when he gets wind of his daughter’s kidnapping. He could be a perfect target for blackmail since Iran has nuclear ambitions. He seeks help from an old friend and college mate who is the Prime Minister of Israel. The Prime Minister agrees to help but this means compromising the Mossad agent in Iran as he is the only one who can help rescue Layla. The agent is given orders to rescue Layla from Iran or if impossible kill her. The agent knows what he must do. The rescue mission commences and a lot of events occur in the process of the rescuer, Layla’s superhero trying to rescue her from the Iranians who will stop at nothing to catch them. The two fall in love but fight to resist each other but eventually they have to accept it is what it is. After the mission is a success Cyrus avoids Layla for more than a year but the two, with a baby girl as a result of their encounter in Iran reunite and live happily forever after. Cyrus must however live with a bullet threat on his head.
This book is magically set from the start, with chapter one two and three setting the scene. It contains a variety of eventful scenes intended to keep the reader interested and entertained. The reader is taken to a journey from the United Kingdom to Saudi Arabia to Israel and Azerbaijan all in one flight called Escape.
The book brings out issues of family, education, love, espionage and deceit all in one. Love for family and the need of peace in the world are a central concept of the book with acts of sacrifice and patriotism coming into play. The need for peaceful co-existence is stressed by the Author with for example phrases like ‘Let the safety of the people be the Supreme Law’. These aspects make the book the ideal Romantic Thriller with a sense of creativity and authenticity. It is a real life image of human relation in times of fear and tragedy.
The most I like about the book is how its romantic theme takes control unexpectedly with two people brought together by circumstances ending up being an almost perfect couple. The way the Author plays around with words in the romance scenes is magnificent, carrying the reader far away from this world. One of the best lines for me is “She offered him the Holy Grail: herself.” I cannot forget it. I also like the way the Author surprises the reader’s expectations of just romance to other important aspects of the day to day life as well.
However I feel the tempo of the book goes down after the rescue mission is a success with scenes coming from extra ordinary to just Normal. The scenes become predictable and boring compared to the other parts of the book. I feel the Author could have come up with a thrilling way to end the story. However the suspense of what will happen to Cyrus him being on the Iranians wanted list is spot on.
Belle Ami wrote the book with so much passion dedication and skill thus bringing the best out of it. A true life story comes out in no better way than it does in this book. It is Romantic, Thrilling and Educative. However due to the low Tempo ending, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It’s a job well done and any adult reader will not regret reading it.
