Below is a review of Escape, written by Belle Ami. It is a romantic thriller, based on two different cultures. Note that it begins in Iran explaining the nuclear obsession of the country. The writer has done impeccable research on the different cultures. She has created a virtual world around the reader which one falls in love with. The strength in the details enables a reader to completely understand the beauty of the two different cultures.
Cyrus Hassani is an assistant to the deputy director of Oghab, Iran’s secretive intelligence organization with authority over their nuclear motivations. On the other hand auburn haired, Layla Wallace is an art history doctoral candidate at Harvard. While on vacation to Dubai she and her Saudi boyfriend are kidnapped and are taken to Tehran. Her kidnapping was just a coincident as she was not the real target but as the daughter of a renowned nuclear physicist, she is a perfect target for blackmail. Layla’s kidnapping created an international incident involving the Americans, Iranians and Israelis.
Cyrus a deep-cover Mosad agent is activated and given a mission. He is ordered to either get Layla out of Iran, or if failing kill her. When Cyrus first see Layla, he feels an unexplainable attraction towards her. When they are running for their lives, he’s fighting not only a powerful administration which is going to the last possible extent to destroy him for his betrayal, but an impossible attraction to a woman he’s struggling to resist.
Their escape from Iran seems impossible as all routes are closed, with the Iranian administration down to hunt them. However, Layla is reluctantly drawn to a man who tells her he has no soul. Together they race to escape the deadly net set to keep them from leaving Iran. Belle Ami's Escape perfectly associate eroticism and romance, with danger, international threats of nuclear activity, and the prospects of peace. Layla and Cyrus are a piece of a beautiful creation one falls in love with, and would do the same for any reader from the beginning.
However, I do feel that the writer fails to differentiate between culture and religion at some points. The religion and culture are entangled in some eastern societies, and it is crucial to differentiate between them to get a clear picture. The writer has been able to show the positive sides of eastern societies at some points but most of the time the culture has been depicted as the religion. All in all, the book is a great fast paced read for all those who love thrill and romance together. I would rate it a 3 out of 4 stars.
