High Hopes by Sue Lilley is a sweet book full of romance and intrigue. It tells a story of lies, deceit and most of all love. Grace has kept secret the fact that she had a child with her best friend Sam after a drunken encounter one night while his girlfriend Dixie was out of town and gave her little girl up for adoption. Now her little girl is all grown up and has contacted her with the hopes of meeting her and her father.

You will not want to put this book down as the truth unfolds. Follow newly divorced Grace as she tries to find the best time to tell her friends that Sam is the father of her child at the same time as she finds herself inexplicitly attracted to their much younger gardener. She knows she is still in love with her ex-husband but cannot help the feelings she is developing towards him despite the difference in their ages.

Meanwhile, Sam and Dixie are having problems of their own. Money is tight and Sam has had an affair. They are attempting to work through these problems and Grace fears what her news will do to their relationship.

I give this book a 4 out of four stars rating. I enjoyed the book and felt the story line was very well written. The characters were incredibly believable. The storyline was well paced, and I was eager to finish to see how it ended. There is minimal swearing and only a few light love scenes making this story interesting without sensationalism. While it might be easy to dislike Grace for the things she has done, she is such a great character I found myself hoping that her friends would forgive her. As I followed the story, I hoped Sam and Dixie would find a way to resolve their issues and stay together. Dixie is such a strong character. She has known about the baby the whole time but had no idea that Sam is the father. The way she is finally able to accept the situation and bring the friends back together inspires me to be a better person and friend.

This book probes into the mistakes made when the characters were young and the misunderstandings that can arise when those mistakes are brought to light in the wrong manner. I recommend it to anyone who likes a good storyline that is dramatic without being melodramatic.
