The Legacy of Job's Wife by Cynthia Koelker is a fictional depiction of Ix'ises' life. For persons not familiar with the bible, Ix'ises was Job's wife. Today, Job is still known and revered as one of God's most favored servants.

In this novel, Koelker masterfully reveals the type of lifestyle that Ix'ises most likely would have led and she also brings to the fore many of life's most critical and valuable lessons.

In the earlier chapters, the reader follows the relationship between Ix'ises and Job and notes how it begins from their innocent, childhood friendship and develops into an intimate and loving relationship. The reader also observes the fact that Ix'ises' family is grounded in nature whereas Job's family relies heavily on God as its saviour in all things. This distinction leads to many sources of tension between Ix'ises and Job.

On reading the novel, one sees how quickly strong friendships and romantic relationships can fall apart. Factors such as loss of fortune, illness and barrenness can also cause persons to turn their backs on their loved ones.

In fact, one of the reasons why I thoroughly enjoyed this book is due to the fact that most of the situations that arise still occur today in our world. The many trials that couples encounter are explored. The harshness and cruelty of human beings are also exposed.

In the latter chapters of this book, Ix'ises has to deal with a number of catastrophes. Yet, after sinking to her very lowest, the reader will be pleased to see that she regains her faith in life and pushes forward. Her doubts about God are even converted into a strong belief in this divine being. Indeed, her character is a strong and inspirational one for all women.

As this book is based on a biblical story, there are frequent references to God and spirituality. As a result of this, I do not believe that it will be a welcomed read by everyone. Persons who may not believe in God may lose interest as the chapters progress. They may also not connect with the story. As for the recommended readership, only persons aged 18 years and older ought to read this book as there are a few erotic scenes and some instances of animal sacrifices which are quite graphic.

As regards its rating, I will rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars as there are some grammatical errors. Nevertheless, it is a highly enjoyable and well-written story.
