Review of Surviving the Business of Healthcare
Surviving the Business of Healthcare by Barbara Galutia Regis PA-C.
Healthcare is a serious matter, as it can determine whether someone lives or dies. The quality of care you receive greatly influences the quality of your life—or whether you live at all. In Africa, we say that everyone is just one illness away from poverty or bankruptcy. As I read this book, I realized that this reality is true worldwide, including in the U.S.A.
This book is written by an author who is also a healthcare provider, and I appreciated the perspective of someone on the inside. The author shares insights from her profession, highlighting both the positives and areas that need improvement to better serve patients. The book begins with some background on the author’s life, which I found valuable. These details provided depth, helping me fully understand the author’s journey and building my confidence in her expertise. Knowing that the author is well-grounded in her field makes her perspective an invaluable asset to readers. The fact that she was also a patient while writing this book offers a balanced view, making it relatable for anyone facing health challenges.
There are many healthcare professions, each playing a crucial role in patient care, but I hadn’t fully appreciated the importance of a primary care provider (PCP) before reading this book. A PCP helps assess health challenges, provides accurate diagnoses, and refers patients to the right specialists. The author is also a physician assistant—a role I might not have sought out during a health crisis before, but after reading this book, I would definitely consider doing so.
By the time you finish this book, you’ll have learned how to advocate for yourself as a patient, how to find the right professionals to care for you throughout your life, the importance of obtaining health insurance and how to get it, how to save on medication costs, how to avoid unnecessary healthcare expenses, and how to make the healthcare system work for you.
My favorite part of the book is the author’s personal experience, which transformed her life and impacted others. This is a book you’ll want to share with others—not just because it’s about health, but because the author presents the information in an accessible way that everyone can understand.
The book is well edited; I found no errors in it. I have no criticism about the content and rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend it to anyone who values their health and is ready to learn new ways to improve it. You might even be inspired to pursue a career in the author’s profession.

Elizabeth, thank you for this review! Self-advocacy with respect to healthcare is huge. As is the value of having good healthcare to protect things like your emergency fund and finances from a healthcare disaster. This book sounds interesting, and it's encouraging to see that you have given it 5 out of 5 stars. I will keep an eye out for this book for my own review opportunity.Elizabeth-Tush4Christ wrote: ↑10 Aug 2024, 23:07 [Following is a volunteer review of "Surviving the Business of Healthcare" by Barbara Galutia Regis PA-C.]
