Review of Phobia Relief
Phobia Relief: From Fear to Freedom is a non-fiction book by Kalliope Barlis.
The author was an apprentice to Dr. Richard Banlder, who created Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). NLP is the study of successful behavior. In this book, Barlis describes Dr. Bandler’s work and suggests exercises to relieve people of their phobias. As stated in the introduction, this book can’t replace therapy. However, it is a good self-help book when you have non-life-threatening phobias.
A phobia is an uncontrollable fear response to an object or a situation. The particularity of a phobia is that the fear response is triggered even when you are only thinking about the object of your fear, while it is not immediately around you.
Barlis uses Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques in this book to address such irrational fears. She aims to change how you think about your phobias with practical exercises to reduce their impact.
The book is divided into three parts.
“Shrink Your Fears & Find Your Purpose” thoroughly explains the difference between fear and phobia. It is essential to know that some fears are necessary, for instance, the fear that keeps you from burning your hand on a stove. However, phobias defy logic. Shifting the way you think about the object of your phobia enables you to decrease its negative impact on you.
“How to Change Fear Into Freedom” comprises additional practical exercises to change your feelings about your fears. These exercises help you to distance yourself from the object of your fear and plan your future without this fear.
“NLP Change Work in Action” is the transcript of a session between Barlis and one of her clients. It provides a further understanding of her methods and how they can help.
The writing style is precise, straightforward, and understandable by anyone. The exercises are accessible and require imagination. As someone who has both acrophobia and claustrophobia, I learned a lot about how to address my fears. Now that I have finished reading this book, I feel more ready to face challenging situations.
To conclude, I gave Phobia Relief: From Fear to Freedom a well-deserved rating of 5 out of 5 stars. It is a self-help book that truly has the potential to help people suffering from phobias.

Anais! I've been away on vacation and catching up on all my reading...looks like you've been busy too! I've read a handful of reviews on this book, and I don't think anyone else presented the difference between fears and actual phobias! Your review makes me curious, and I'd love to read that transcript session to see how the author is addressing this issue. I had to look up acrophobia...learned something new today! I like how you shared how this book personally helped you! I don't have any phobias, but certainly many fears. I enjoyed reading your review as always! Until next time...Anaïs Quesson wrote: ↑06 Dec 2023, 14:44 [Following is a volunteer review of "Phobia Relief" by Kalliope Barlis.]

I am a fan of cognitive behavioral therapy. This book introduces the methods of neuro-linguistic programming that I consider to be a type of CBT. I agree with everything you wrote in this review. I enjoyed this book also. Check out the Youtube video of Michael Strahan learning to lose his phobia of snakes while being guided by Dr. Bandler.Anaïs Quesson wrote: ↑06 Dec 2023, 14:44 [Following is a volunteer review of "Phobia Relief" by Kalliope Barlis.]
