Review by Lisa Grimaldi of In It Together | "not a book to be read quickly or only once"
In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes is a beautiful, non-fiction, self-help, philosophical novel that had me completely fooled. I thought I would be reading another preachy, self-righteous book that promises salvation if you buy a particular product or follow a strict, particular plan. What I got was a refreshingly lovely blueprint of how to find true contentment and self-love. Hughes does an amazing job of interacting with others from a place of pure love and acceptance. He talks about what we are not, namely the clothes we wear, our job titles, and our income and possessions. He talks about what we are, namely, souls sharing a universe in which we should love ourselves and love each other. This is not a book to be read quickly or only once. Readers will find themselves reaching for this book over and over again as they face the struggles of daily life.
One of the things that I loved about this book was the repetition of principles with different examples to drive home a point. I found this particular writing style to be a memorable and dramatic way to remember the main point of a particular chapter. I also thought the author’s ability to produce “sound bites” from each chapter was an effective way to remember the principles he is promoting. One that sticks with me, as an exuberant overachiever, is “Do less, better”. That statement is simple, succinct, and easy to remember as you go about your daily life. I know I will carry this with me from here on. I also love the amount of genuine care and affection that comes through on every page. This is the perfect book to read at a time when it seems that hatred, misunderstanding, and violence are abundant.
There is not much negative to say about this book. It is dense with information, philosophical jargon, and quotes from authors, philosophers, writers, etc. For these reasons, I found it a very slow read and often had to stop and reread a quote or a section to unpack the information fully. I would imagine that is true of any philosophical work.
This book is exceptionally well-edited. I did not find a single grammatical or typographical error. The paragraph spacing was pleasing to the eye and made the book easier to read and follow. For these reasons and the reasons stated above, I am delighted to give this book 4 out of 4 stars.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with issues that they seek to improve. This book will be helpful to people who want to live in the present, who seek happiness and self-love, and for anyone who wants insight into how to accept and love their fellow man.
