According to the National Institute of Mental Health, Binge eating disorder has been recently recorded as the most common type of eating disorder. However, few people with the condition seek treatment, and many others do not even realize that binge eating is an eating disorder.

How to Stop Binge Eating And Learn To Love Food Again by Rebecca L. Robson is a 114-paged (in its pdf version) non-fiction book that proffers a solution to this highly overlooked disease that plagues many lives. The author, who was formerly a binge eater herself, has used her own experiences to curate this information-packed guidebook with the hope of helping others like her pull out of this destructive pattern and start living healthier, more satisfying lives. This book teaches several methods and new practices that can be adopted to ensure long-term results. The author first and foremost dismisses the idea of dieting, stating that this method is ineffective and problematic. She claims that diets only trigger a harmful repetitive cycle, leading the binge eater back to where they started. To this effect, the author then goes on to relate other techniques that she claims would be fundamental to the recovery from binge eating. One of the most interesting techniques explained is the 'mindfulness technique.' She states that binge eating, as with most addictions, occurs in a state of mindlessness, which means the brain switches off during the activity. However, this technique employs flipping the switch in the brain by becoming mindful. Mindfulness is achieved through interruption, which is simply being curious, observant, and attentive to the body during the activity. The author also advises revisiting your past; by understanding what shaped the past, you can better understand how to shape the future. She mentions learning to starve the binge by increasing intake of more nutritious food like complex carbs, proteins, and fats. These techniques and many others were thoroughly expounded, each having its chapter.

There were many positive things to note about this book. The most obvious is the tone/approach used in writing. The author spoke from a place of great desire to help, and the reader could easily feel this through the pages of this book. Her words were free from judgment and compassionate. You could tell that she was genuinely interested in helping the reader. I also enjoyed her writing style; it was simple, straightforward, and impactful. The author wrote from experience, which proves the credibility of the practices shared. These practices discussed were backed up by science and research, carefully thought out, and presented. I also found that one could apply many techniques discussed to various addictions. For instance, the author speaks about revisiting the past to listen to and observe the inner child. This technique can apply to several addictions that take root in childhood.

There was absolutely nothing I found wrong with this book. I picked it up to gather information on the concerned topic, and I wasn't disappointed. I also had many takeaways that I have even begun to practice myself. I can say that this book was professionally edited with no errors spotted. Due to these points mentioned, there is no reason not to award this book a perfect 4 out of 4 stars rating.

I would recommend this to anyone struggling with binge eating, overeating, and maintaining a healthy eating habit. If you also suspect that you might be suffering from any eating disorders, I would advise you to pick this up. Finally, for anyone interested in the topic for whatever reasons, this is probably the best book you can lay your hands on.

I’m not really a fan of self-help books. This, however, comes from someone who has dealt with the problem of eating disorder herself. I have never encountered this personally, but some of my friends have. Maybe this could help me help them.

Wow, I think this book would be very helpful, and since it is written by someone who has also experienced binge eating it would be more relatable to readers.
