Review by kimoy13 -- Fast-Starting A Career of Consequence
Fast-Tracking a Career of Consequence is an amazing self-help book that manages to seamlessly blend together spiritual and business principles. The author Fred Sievert states from the very beginning of the book that he is a firm Christian believer and that all of his successes are premised on his heavy reliance on Jesus Christ.
Indeed, this book targets two main categories of persons. The first group consists of persons who are entering the working world for the first time. The second group comprises persons who are reentering the workplace after a significant period of time.
I especially like the fact that this book is compartmentalized into two main sections. The first section treats with one's spiritual life. The second section delves into the practical aspects of being successful at the work place. For example, in the first section, Sievert highlights the importance of determining one's spiritual gifts as this teaches one how to use one's strengths in the work place. I must commend Sievert as he easily assists the reader in figuring out what are his spiritual gifts. He is able to do this by providing a quiz for the reader to take to determine what are his strengths.
The first section also discusses other issues such as establishing one's personal values which helps one to determine whether or not a company is a right fit. The importance of relying on Jesus in the work place as well as praying at the work place is also discussed. Indeed, the section is very Christian in nature and as such, may not be applicable to non-Christians.
The second section which focuses on the more practical steps to becoming successful in a workplace can certainly apply to all persons, regardless of their religious beliefs. In this section, the reader learns about the different types of cultures that an organization can have. One is also exposed to business terms such as SWOT analysis and strategy.
It is worthy of note that many persons who dislike figures also tend to shy away from the issue of financial statements. Nevertheless, Sievert simplifies such statements and teaches the reader the most important parts of such statements that should be focused on. He also emphasizes how vital the understanding of these statements are to the individual and the company.
The reader is even given an in depth view into how a good presentation is done. In my opinion, the chapter that deals with this topic is paramount as we will all at one time or another have to do a presentation at work. Here Sievert lays out exactly what must be done to ensure that one's presentation is memorable and impactful.
It is to be noted that each chapter commences with a Biblical verse. The book also ends with excerpts from the Bible. Sievert also concludes by highlighting a number of Jesus' leadership skills. It is also worthy of mention that the need to balance one's family, faith and career is discussed at length.
After reading this book, I must say that it is best suited for Christian readers. This is so as throughout the book, the Bible and Christian values are mentioned. Nevertheless, a number of important lessons are found throughout the book. These lessons can definitely make an impact on non-Christians who are open-minded enough to absorb these lessons.
I cannot say that there is anything that I do not like in this book. On the contrary, I think that this book is very all-encompassing, informative and realistic. I will certainly recommend it to all persons aged 18 years and older who are looking for success in the world of work. The language is very clear and the book is also very well-edited. These two factors make the book an easy and enjoyable read.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as it covers a wide range of applicable business concerns. It also engages the reader by requiring him to take the quiz as well as encouraging him to continue learning about himself after reading this book. I truly encourage anyone looking for that extra push towards professional success to read this book. I actually feel renewed and motivated after reading it. Good job Fred Sievert!!
