Review of The 11.05 Murders

The 11.05 Murders by Brian O'Hare was a very intriguing mystery. The story takes place in the UK, specifically in Belfast, Ireland. So, I got a glimpse of what their criminal justice system is like in Ireland.

I rate it 3 out of 4 stars only deducting for recurrent head-hopping and a few typos. For example: on page 150, "plashed" instead of splashed; Also, "tyre" instead of tire.

To Summarize: A gruesome murder has taken place at precisely 11:05 pm on a Tuesday evening. Inspector Sheehan and his team; including a sharp-witted, young female Sgt. Denise Stewart, must investigate and apprehend the perpetrator before he kills again. While the male detectives investigate a local businessman who was involved in organized crime, it is Stewart who starts to follow her own lead and the connection to the brutal assault of a young girl years earlier.

Numerous leads were chased down during the investigation of this case, keeping it grounded and believable. I found reading it an addictive guilty pleasure. I couldn't wait to read about the next twist or turn, and I kept trying to anticipate what would happen next; however, I was continually shocked and surprised.

The murders are gruesome, and the subject matter is mature. I would not recommend this book to readers under the age of 16. Also, it is not for those with a weak stomach or the faint of heart. However, if you like brutal revenge movies like The Last House on the Left (2009); or if you are a fan of gritty crime dramas like Criminal Minds you will definitely enjoy this mystery novel.

I liked The backstory about how Sgt. Denise Stewart got promoted--I could relate to her, and what she went through as a woman in a man's world, infiltrating and exposing the sins of the "boy's club." I liked her character, as well as the characters Inspector Sheehan and Tom Allen. I rooted for them to catch their killer and find out the entire truth about this grizzly crime spree.

What I didn't care for was the head-hopping. I understand omnipresent point-of-view, but the POV would often change in the middle of a paragraph or scene. It made for some confusion in certain areas as far as who was thinking what, and who was talking.

All in all, I did enjoy this book and look forward to reading more Inspector Sheehan mysteries by Brian O'Hare. I am definitely a new fan of this author.
