This is a review of the novel 'The 11:05 Murders' by Brian O'Hare. In this mystery novel, detectives are tasked with finding a violent murderer but the investigation drags on due to unforeseen complications. These complications include the stalking of a new Sergeant on the force, repeated attacks on another officer and difficulty eliminating suspects from a relatively short suspect list. However, when an officer is kidnapped by the killer, Chief Inspector Sheehan must use his famous investigative skills to try to get to the killer in time.

I give this novel 3 out of 4 stars. One of the positive things about this publication is character development. There are many characters but each main character has memorable characteristics and is explored enough to give the reader an opportunity to decide on whether or not they should like/root for the character. Secondly, this work was filled with suspense which is essential for a mystery novel. Particularly in the last 20 pages, but also throughout, the author used descriptives, dialogue and plot twists to create a palpable suspense which even led to goosebumps at one point. This was the main determinator of the 3-star rating.

This novel did not receive 4 stars for several reasons. Firstly, there was repetition of unique vocabulary which, I feel, detracts from the narration/description and secondly, even in the very suspenseful scenes, there was dialogue that diminished my anxiety because it seemed inordinately excitable. In other words, it felt too forced. Also negative was the insertion of Inspector Sheehan's wife. Their conversations felt hugely unnecessary and 2 out of 3 of those conversations could have been completely omitted without any loss of fluidity.

The next reason for 3 stars instead of 4 is the stereotypical description of the characters. Many are blond and all who are blond are beautiful. What? In fact, most of the characters are either handsome or beautiful which is unrealistic. The final reason is the inclusion of at least 11 F words and their derivatives. Expletives are not needed to demonstrate a character's menace or ruthlessness and the novel would have been better off without them. My foremost reasons for not giving 4 stars were the stereotypes and the expletives.

I believe that most people who read this book will enjoy it. I do not recommend it for children due to the expletives it contains and neither for those who do not like thrillers or mysteries, but, for those who do, it will thrill them and will most definitely keep them guessing till almost the very end.
