I have just finished reading The 11.05 Murders by Brian O'Hare. I rate this book 3 out of 4.

This score would have been a full 4 out of 4 had it not been for a few editing errors within as this was, honestly, one of the most gripping books I have read for a long time.

Following the story of a female police officer who has recently transferred to a new station after harassment at her previous location, you ride alongside the characters as if you are a bystander, rather than being written from the internal viewpoint of one of the players.

Within the first couple of chapters of this book I had worked out who the culprit was, however, I’m not sure if this was pure luck or because I am a chronic over-thinker and constantly pull apart minor details until I get the bottom of any situation. I’m the very definition of an armchair detective in this sense.

Character-wise I enjoyed the strong female lead in what is often demonstrated to be a male-focussed profession, and I was glad to see there was a strong sense of right and wrong when it came to the way that she was treated by her colleagues.

The story itself is very clever, with various different elements weaving amongst each other, all connected by the thinnest of threads and leaving you wondering how they all meet to entangle themselves.

In terms of language, I found this book gave enough information to give you a vague concept of what the author was seeing inside their head, but allowed you to picture each character as your own version of that; not forcing or steering you to view them in any particular sense.

I was deeply disappointed when the end of this book came – despite the relief of getting to find out whodunit (and that I was right!) and I would definitely read a follow-up to this is the author was to decide to create a series, as I feel each of the characters had enough space for growth and a back-story to be constructed around them.

All in all, I am very impressed with this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes the crime and/or thriller genre. It’s clever and keeps you on the edge of your seat – a real page turner!

As mentioned, there were a few editing issues, but had these not been present I would have given this book full marks. An excellent piece of writing and a very enjoyable read.
