i]Lemoncella-Cocktail[/i] is a thriller work of fiction by Rene Natan. This book has no cover nor publishing information available in the downloaded copy and there is no mention of any editorial team.
The story is about a young man, Patrick Carter, whose life takes a turn when he comes to the rescue of a young teenage girl. Patrick becomes entangled in the lives of the McLeod, a well-off family who, along with Patrick, become a target of determined criminals. From being a loner with a past that haunts him and having no future prospects he finds a family in the McLeod and he is given a new sense of purpose and responsibility as he finds himself having to work closely with law enforcement to come to the bottom of a mystery which threatens the very security of the nation. Fast paced, with unexpected twists and turns, the book follows the pursuit of the hunted and the hunter, will he and his new found family ever know peace?
I liked that the plot of this book is straightforward without being boring. The author ensured an engaging read by not focusing on one main character but by having a number of main characters and therefore many stories within one. Exploring the lives of the characters in detail, letting us into their thoughts and emotions, the author gave the story desirable depth. Through out the book there is easy transition between the characters, the themes, the issues explored and it is this clever change of scenes and perceptions of the same situation which keep the story interesting.
Love, protection and survival are the themes at the center of this story but there is an element of sadness and moroseness which further highlights the leading themes. The themes are used to connect the characters, making the antagonists and protagonists to appear connected but still manage to enhance their differences and highlight their opposing sides.
This book has an insurmountable frequency of incorrect spelling, grossly bad grammar and poor sentence structure. The dialogue text is worse than non-dialogue, the characters are made to sound as if they are not native English speakers which contradicts the setting as the story is set in Canada and the names of the characters generally imply the characters are of an English descent. I am aware Canada has an assortment of nationalities as part of its citizenry however in this particular story I am led to believe the characters should be fluent in English, there is no information that leads me to think otherwise hence the expectation that the English should not be so obviously distorted. The author on many occasions uses the wrong tenses, wrong pronouns, wrong adjectives, wrong conjunctives or creates sentences that need to be completely re-written to make sense at all. I got the impression that English is not the author’s first language and the poor quality of the English is a result of translation from the author’s first language. I am certain had the story been professionally edited this would have been rectified. Due to the bad English, it is very easy to be confused and lose the plot as there is a disjointedness to the story, more so in the first few chapters leaving the reader to make their own connections and assumptions however once one gets used to the English and overlooks the grammatical errors, there is a good story behind it all.
This book is memorable to me for being the best book written in the worst English i have ever read. Poor English aside this book has a lot of great potential as the author has great creative skills and a great imagination. It is definitely nowhere near ready for publishing, it reads like a draft and appears like a draft, with the lack of cover page, introduction or editorial note. I would not recommend this book to anybody at all unless it is to be used as an example of poor English grammar and spelling. I rate this book 1 out of 4 stars mainly because of the language errors however I don't doubt once edited it would rate higher as the story line itself and its delivery is decent.
