The story follows closely on the heels of Final Notice By Van Fleischer, where the reader learns of how criminals as well as political deviants capitalize on the sentiments of the dying, whilst the inventor of this almost science-fiction worthy watch tries desperately and quite single-mindedly to correct his mistakes. This all unfolds even as the FBI scrambles to save lives from death watch wearers. We are re-introduced to a few of the characters from the previous instalment even as we are introduced to new characters that add depth to this politically charged story with subtle themes of romance, human trafficking, rape, and cyber espionage. Though quite comprehensive, Final Act managed to be a delightful mind-provoking thriller with a rewarding ending.

Commendations to Fleischer on a sound plot and characters that were well-rounded. The reader was gradually introduced to the main plot as the story progressed with what initially appeared to be a happy coincidence snowballing into a multinational act of terrorism, and what each character was willing to lose to achieve their ultimate objective. Despite the tension, the character development through strong relationships was much appreciated. Friendships, marriage, and budding relationships acted as the foundation of this novel and calmingly created periods of reprieve from the troubles they all faced. Final Act was well written through expert plot narration and character development.

Of note, despite the warning in the blurb, it was still disturbing to read of a character’s family ordeal and the recurrent theme of rape by people in authority. The author narrated the story to expose the hidden truths unapologetically and vividly so that the reader was left with no doubts about the loss of innocence the characters endured. It was well written and added to the over-arching plot of the story and though unpalatable, it was well worded by Fleischer and did not detract from the story.

I would rate Final Act by Van Fleischer at 3 out of 4 stars for a well thought out and executed story alluding to the dangers of having nothing to lose and much to gain. It was a pleasure to read following on from Final Notice and my only comment was the political dominance shown by one party over the other but that may possibly be due to the party in power in the story. Overall, this story was enjoyable and became infinitely harder to put down the more I read it.

Given the political nature and themes discussed, I would recommend Final Act to readers who enjoy thrillers and suspense and particularly those with knowledge or interest in exploring the political climate in the United States of America. Themes that may influence reader choice is the inclusion of homosexuality which may or may not be acceptable to all; and the brief but possibly triggering mention of rape and human trafficking. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone with a few hours to lose to unravel a good suspense.
