Review of Desert Sanctuary
Does police corruption spread throughout the entire department, or is it just in the gang task force? This question gets answered in the exciting thriller Desert Sanctuary. This 280 page novel is written by Fred G. Baker. What exactly happens to a small group of immigrants from El Salvador seeking asylum at a church? There was a shooting that involved police officers. This was a drug bust gone bad. Now the confidential informant had backup, but what happened? Then a police officer was blamed for the shooting. Did she do it or was she the fall guy? There was an eyewitness, but he was in danger. The Westside gang did not take kindly to snitches. In this riveting plot, the eyewitness went into hiding with the asylum seekers. But through it all, he confessed to a priest what he had seen, which put others at risk. Meanwhile, Sanchez's apartment is burglarized. She alerts the police department and as fate would have it, when they searched her apartment they found a gun that matched the murder weapon. Did she commit murder? As a possible cop killer, her stay in jail turns out to be brutal. Can her partner and friends get her released and her name cleared?
I found that this amazing plot kept me on the edge of my seat. The main characters, Sanchez and Montero, were very likable. The author, Fred G. Baker, was detailed and his writing flowed easily. Before I knew it, I was at the end of the story. I was mesmerized by the characters and the fast-moving storyline. The characters were easy to follow throughout the chain of events. Intrigued by the developing plot, I wanted to continue reading and not put the book down.
My main dislike for this novel was the gruesome details of the violent scenes. They were described in vivid detail. Although I am not squeamish, I did find some of the descriptions of events to be very grotesque. Overall, the novel was an intense, exciting tale.
Upon my reading experience of this book, I rate this novel a four out four stars. Desert Sanctuary is a well-edited, thrilling book. I found very few errors. The setting for this novel is at a church but I found no reason that it would be offensive to any religious group.
My audience recommendation for this gripping novel would be for mature readers. This book had a very interesting and believable storyline. I believe the readers will find this thriller as engaging and captivating as I did. It was a detective, murderous, humanitarian plot all rolled into one incredible book. This cliffhanger made me want to read more books in this series.
