Review by kimoy13 -- Shadow Game by A.M. Adair
Shadow Game by A.M. Adair is a spy fiction novel that promises to leave you on the edge of your seat.
Elle is a CIA spy agent who is called upon any time a dangerous terrorist threat needs to be eliminated. In this novel, the reader sees that she is usually a one-man team. However, in her latest mission in Iraq, she finds herself having to operate in a four-man team. This situation is a novel one for her. However, as the story progresses, she is seen to adapt and undergo some personal changes.
Each chapter in this novel provides action and conflict. There is never a dull moment in the plot. Terrorists are assassinated. Elle has some near death experiences. There is even friction and turmoil within Elle's team.
I truly appreciate the care with which Adair wrote this novel. The military terms and acronyms encountered bring this book and its characters to life. The weapons used are also described in great detail. As a matter of fact, after reading this book, you may very well think yourself an expert on guns and ammunition.
I also like the fact that the story is based in Iraq. This country has always been known to harbor terrorists. Again, Adair provides a genius description of the villages, temperature, scents and people of Iraq. The strong imagery presented, draws the reader into the actual activities occurring in the various places, visited by Elle and her teammates. The reader can almost feel the heat and the dust on his skin as well as smell the numerous scents described in the novel.
The development of the characters is probably what I like the most in this book. Characters that are seen to be shy and quiet at the start of the book become outspoken and confident towards the end of the story. Elle herself is a strong, independent and fearless woman. However, as the plot unfolds she undergoes emotional and mental changes. She becomes caring, patient and even develops a romantic interest in a co-military operative.
Shadow Game is a very realistic novel. Its characters are relatable. The scenes in Iraq are accurately depicted. The personal relationships are also seen to have problems, most of which are thankfully resolved towards the end of the novel.
I honestly cannot think of anything that I do not like in this novel. Several lessons are also provided in the plot. An important lesson is actually the need to be cognizant of the fact that everything on the internet is not always true. Adair highlights this message when she spends a lot of time in the book explaining how videos and voices can easily be edited through the use of special software.
I recommend that persons aged 18 years and older who enjoy action and terrorist novels read this book. They will not be disappointed. Sensitive readers must still be aware that there are some very graphic, violent scenes which may be unpleasant reading for some persons. There is also the use of some profanity and sexual content. However, these latter 2 factors are not excessive and are needed to lend further credence to the plot.
Although this book is near impeccable as far as content and action are concerned, there are minor grammatical and spelling errors. As such, I must rate it a 3 out of 4 stars.
This book is by no means religious in nature but some reference is made to the beliefs and practices of the members of the Daesh. This may make some readers uncomfortable. Nevertheless, such reference is also a vital element in this story.
I truly did not want this novel to end. It is just such an enjoyable and exciting read. Fortunately, there is a book 2 called The Deeper Shadow. This book will again focus on Elle and her dangerous assignments. I can hardly wait to read it. Good job A.M. Adair.
