I found Final Notice by Van Fleisher a rather fresh perspective on some of the on-going in society. It shared the stories of several characters and the ways their actions and decisions were affected by those of other people. It threw the spotlight on the effect of the actions of a few organisations like the NRA, lobbyists and the political system, on countless lives which are put at risk by laws enacted for selfish gains. It also gave insight into the internal workings of Politicians and how the populace should be mindful of how they interpret politically related news and events. It touched on issues which have become rampant on the news such as immigration, racial discrimination and the spate of gun violence in schools in the United States.

It told of how an elderly couple changed their perception and lifestyle as a result of reconciling The News and their own personal experiences. Their journey from that point connects with those of other characters who were influenced by similar occurrences. VT2, the innovation that led to the title, is introduced at some point and makes one consider the decisions one would take if such a device were at one’s disposal. At a point, I felt Vijay would be dark, and defy law enforcement and good conscience in favour of his beloved invention. Van Fleisher surprised me by the cooperation given to Zoe and the FBI by VitalTech. Even Matt surprised me by keeping his word to VitalTech about his articles on the connection between VitalTech and the shootings.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book as it was wholesome and covered a variety of issues about society and the people within it. It positioned the elderly as underdogs and at the same time, almost villains. What I liked the most about the book was its suspense about what Vince would do every time the story turned to him. I was scared for him throughout and thought I knew from the start how he would end up. What I disliked most, is not actually a bad thing. It was the "too good to be true" feel that the story had at the end. When something sounds too good to be true, it often usually is. Though I am not a pessimist, it gives me a sense that the good days will really never come.

I found no errors in the course of my review. It must have been properly edited, and skilfully so at that. Four out of four stars is my rating for this riveting story because the author was able to bring alive each of the characters and endear them to the reader. And at the same time, he roused interest in pertinent societal issues. It takes quite some skill to draw one’s emotion towards a person who is doing the wrong thing. He also gave hope that bad situations and experiences do not need to create bad people or bad results. All in all, I find it a positive book.

I recommend Final Notice by Van Fleisher to both the young and the old, although, I think that the impressionable and superstitious should avoid the book. They may read too much meaning to it, or try to practice some of the ideas the story played around with. I believe that this is why it ends with a footnote that, "it is all fiction". Lovers of thrillers, crime and the elderly would enjoy reading this story.
