Superhighway by Alex Fayman is a captivating read. From the first sentence to the last word, the harrowing tale of this young orphan grips the reader’s attention. I found that with every spare moment I had, my nose was buried in this book. I enjoyed the fast-paced science fiction novel so much that as soon as I finished it, I bought the second one.

Fayman’s novel follows a young man’s discovery of his unique genetic gift, a gift that allows him to travel through the depths of cyberspace. Setting out with pure intentions to fulfill a Robin-Hood-style philanthropy, Alex soon finds himself with a blurred morality and the habit of betraying those who are close to him. The further he delves into his past and the origin of his genetic mutation, the more he loses himself.

Unfortunately, it is obvious to the reader that the book was not professionally edited and I will have to give it a 3 out of 4 rating. If the book had been professionally edited, I would have awarded it a 4 out of 4 rating. At points while reading Superhighway I felt as if I were playing catch-up and I had to flip back to make sure I hadn’t missed a page or two. It was almost as if the author was free-writing the book and failed to go back and fill in the gaps between events. The transitions between plot points at the beginning of the novel were especially rough. Professional editing would have eradicated this problem along with his issues with redundancies within his sentences. On a number of occasions the same word was used multiple times within the same sentence.

I found that Fayman orchestrated Alex’s character development masterfully. Between the pages, the evolution of the protagonist is portrayed with a flawless balance of subtlety. From moment to moment, Alex’s character does not change drastically; however his character at the beginning is dramatically different from his character at the end. Fayman uses a complexity that few master with their character development. I favored the author’s choice to depict Alex as a thoroughly relatable character as well. The downward spiral of Alex’s innocence and goodwill as he transitions from adolescence to adulthood really hit home for me. He makes a mess of things while trying to find himself, which is something everyone can relate to.

Unlike most science-fiction novels I have read, I favored the explanation of the science behind the storyline. It wasn’t written in technical jargon, but rather a colloquial fashion that made it easy for the reader to comprehend. The description of the scientific process behind Alex’s genetic mutation falls perfectly between far-fetched and realistic; a rare occurrence in the genre. Overall, I would recommend this book to other readers and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
