What would you do if you suddenly developed a superpower, but it left you homeless and without money, identification, or friends? Would you turn to theft? Plagued with self-doubt and emotional baggage, orphaned eighteen-year-old Alex Fine is thrust into the world with nothing to his name except the ability to travel electrical lines, absorb data, and change computer files. His first couple of trips send him to far away and exotic locations he never would have seen in his old life.

As Alex masters his new abilities, he creates a bank account, steals from Russian oligarchs, and buys an island, but he still craves a family. Being young and attractive, Alex first looks to girls his own age. Bouncing from relationship to relationship, every new female captivates all of his interest until he meets a new lady. In the inexplicable way of teenage boys, he tries to impress everyone with material goods and lavish meals. He believes that everything is made better with money, so when Alex starts a charitable foundation, he uses his girlfriend’s dad as his lawyer and funds it with $1 billion. Nothing with money is done half-way.

I really enjoyed the way Alex was portrayed. He is an eighteen-year-old boy who suddenly has billions of dollars and unlimited ability to get more money. Despite being educated and intelligent, he hasn’t matured enough to handle his gift. No matter how well he tries to use his powers for good, he never manages. In Alex's best reflection of himself, he said, “I was tired of power, tired of failure, tired of making reckless mistakes, tired of responsibility, and mostly tired of being completely alone.”

I caution would-be readers about a couple issues in the book. While not overly descriptive, there are sexual situations and several scenes of violence and death. I think both were done tastefully and without excess, but it may bother some readers. Additionally, the book does leave off with a cliffhanger. The next book in the trilogy is released, but if you like the story arch tied up neatly and all characters satisfied, you will be reading more than this one book.

I enjoyed the plot twists and how Alex would impulsively respond to new information. The struggle of how to be a good person while using his power gave the story a deeper and more interesting feel. I would give Superhighway (Superhighway Trilogy Book 1) a 4 out of 4 stars. The characters and plot are engaging, and it is hard to put down the book once you start.
