What a book! It's been a while since I happily turned a blind eye to all chores to sit and bask in the magic radiated from the pages of a book, reading a well-told story. Prophase by Mitchel Street gave me that experience.

Prophase centers around Piper, a teenage girl who lost her mom at a young age, and had to take care of her younger brother, with an alcoholic father who did not care much about them. They lived close to the woods where she loved to spend time with nature, she had close friends in school with whom she played music, she was in a budding relationship, and she had an elderly neighbor who adored her and didn't mind Piper having her cat. Life seemed simple enough, but a heart-wrenching incident triggered a rapid chain of reactions that catapulted Piper into a world of lights and supernatural powers that got her questioning her origin; a world of species that lived through the centuries, with a heavy influence on humans. Among them was one so powerful, whose intentions and actions posed a great danger to Piper and her newfound allies. How does Piper reconcile living in two different worlds at the same time? How can she escape the danger that threatens to destroy her and her roots? Will life ever be the same again for her? Mitchel Street weaves a captivating tale that will make it hard for you to put this book down.

I really loved this book and enjoyed it. The story is intriguing and masterfully crafted. The author gave vivid descriptions that make you see the scenes right before your eyes. This is a marvel to me because many of the scenes are out of this world. I especially like the description of the scene at the dance that got Piper running, and also the scene of the incident where her eyes were opened to her new reality. It’s almost hard to believe this is fiction because of how real the author made it. I'm definitely looking out for more of the author's books.

One key takeaway for me is understanding that our thoughts and feelings create an aura around us that defines our identity. I knew this before but this book has awakened this knowledge more sharply. I also had a lightbulb moment when Esther said to Piper, “The grandest form of light is love.” And what a light it is, not just in this book, but also in the life we live today. I now have a new perception and appreciation of love.

Despite how much I enjoyed the book, I rate it 4 out of 5 stars because there were errors that suggest that it was not professionally edited. However, the errors do not take away from the thrill of the book.

I recommend it to lovers of science fiction, adventure, mystery, and romance. Though the key characters are teenagers, which makes it appealing to teenagers, adults will equally enjoy it.

It appears that the sudden realization of her abilities and being thrust into another dimension must have been really confusing for Piper. But even before this, I am glad that she had ways to trying to lead a stable and peaceful life through enjoying nature and being with friends. It is also good to read that the author employed vivid descriptions perfectly. Thanks for the review, @Amy_Jackson.
