Review of Dark Matter Empire (Book 1)
Ryan Stathis is a family man that takes care of his wife and child. He works for a company that builds military weapons as a programmer. The job security he has, has provided his family with a nice home, things are going so well for Ryan what could go wrong? On his way home from leaving the lab late one night he gets caught in a city-wide blackout. He drove back to the lab since it was closer than his home because it was too dangerous to drive far in the complete dark. When he gets to the lab, he starts looking for evidence of what may have caused the city to blackout. As Ryan is searching the lab he is attacked by aliens. During the fight, he is abducted by another spaceship that is run by Artificial Intelligence with no crew which takes him through the ring that has opened up in space sending him far away from Earth. Ryan has to figure out the secrets of the ring to stop Earth from being invaded by aliens.
I appreciated the adventure that Ryan went through. His encounters with other characters were few but had a lot of variety, from meeting the Artificial Intelligence onboard the spaceship to gorilla-looking aliens and their pets. Excitement is felt from beginning to end as the plot is constantly moving, you are never stuck in the same scene chapter after chapter, instead, you are always following Ryan who is trying to be a step ahead of everybody else. Some exciting betrayals between characters occur, Alex Zadeh gives hints that someone was not being completely honest with Ryan, but Ryan was also keeping secrets to himself, I think this brought extra intrigue to certain characters that were introduced and the relationships that Ryan formed with them were fun.
I had a very difficult time relating to Ryan who was the protagonist. Throughout the book, we are reminded that his character is a good person who loves his wife and son, and he seems like he wants to be a model citizen. As Ryan goes through this adventure I found that when he made decisions that contradicted his beliefs and morals it seemed too easy for him to commit those actions with no hesitation, or afterwards, he showed little remorse for committing acts that were claimed not to be his personality, especially a part in the ending.
I give Dark Matter Empire (Book 1) a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. The sequence of events and actions leading up to the climax took the reader on an exhilarating adventure through the galaxy. Besides minor typos I also deducted points because of the flaw I think the protagonist had, with that said I do not think that it took away from the story to make it a distraction because there were many interesting aspects to the plot that I just had to read until the very end.
With the amount of profanity, I would recommend this book to mature readers that enjoy sci-fi novels. I do not think that the profanity is overused for the way the book is delivered to the reader but it has much more than what I read regularly.
