I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Randy Love at Your Service has a deceptive title. There are no detectives in this story. Maybe the author is referring to Randy’s service to women, which he truly believes he is. The story is written from his point of view, so we can’t be sure. I wasn’t looking forward to hearing about all his conquests but quickly begin to like the character despite his bragging nature.

The author gives us some back story at the beginning and a British Terminology guide at the end of the text, which isn’t in any “particular order” so isn’t much help while you are reading. I read it at the end for giggles. The British culture throughout the book gave it an edge for me. I enjoyed trying to figure out what the slang meant. Some of the spellings are British, but easily understood. I liked hearing the accent in the dialogue. Much of it is very funny.

For a while I kept thinking “this is a guy’s book” and not really my kind of read. I thought it would appeal to men more than women. But then I realized it could give me insight into what some men are really thinking most of the time. Then it became more interesting. Sad, pathetic, disappointing, but interesting.

The use of humor is a thread running through the story that moves it along and endears you to the main character. I appreciate a book that can make me laugh and this one did more than once. It could be a coming of age story, a memoir, or a love story. It took me a bit to warm up to the story. I’m not sure where I stopped being bored with the sophomoric boy humor. But after that I was hooked. I looked forward to the next adventure and watching Randy be somewhat introspective. And I was surprised by the end. I would not have predicted that ending.

That is one of the main reasons I liked the book. A surprise ending that is none-the-less believable is hard to pull off in a short story. The author did just that. Another reason I liked the book was that each chapter was a new adventure in Randy’s life. It made it easy to stop there and pick it back up a day later and not be lost. However, I found as the book progressed I found myself unable to put it down wanting to plow through to find out what the boy/man would do next.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book just from looking at the title and genre. Good insight!
