Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a well –written engaging book set in the Olympic Peninsula woven around Native American folklore and family histories and connections setting the pace for a great read based around spiritual adventure and mystery.

The book begins with Tom the main protagonist, getting ready to set off on a camping trip with his friend William and William’s strong, whip smart daughter Maya to trek through the wilderness to visit the grave of his dead grandfather, Bob-Bob and to return an artifact that he took while burying his grandfather in the mountainside. The night before they leave Tom’s ex-wife Ruth shows up at his door with a grand-daughter he’s never met before, Sarah. Sarah is a surly, angry 13 year old teenager who doesn’t want to be there and certainly doesn’t want to go on the trek.

With his new grand-daughter in tow and the new obstacle in his way Tom almost doesn’t go on the trip but after some convincing from William and Maya, Tom decides to take the churlish teenager along setting the story into motion and thus opening the reader to these characters and their development as Tom tells tales of the land significance and history of the Native American’s who lived on the land.

One morning Sarah disappears only to return eight days later injured and telling tales of events and characters that could only have taken place in the past which opens the book up to its secondary story which envelops the reader into the deep spiritual history of the land and its inhabitants. As you read the story you can tell the author is familiar with the landscape and its rich history as he tells a beautiful story that paints a rich picture.

What I liked about this book was even though the story is filled to the brim with story, characters and settings the author uses easy to understand language and the characters interact in a believable manner while the relationships remain true.

What I liked least was that the author left the ending open and many questions unanswered and I have since learnt that a sequel is in the works. I also found the first couple of chapters fragmented and hard to read but this is soon overcome and you are absorbed into the story as the pace picks up and the story starts to gain traction.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars as overall it was a great read and the story was original and well researched and a wonderful weekend read filled with adventure and family. This book would appeal to young adults or teenagers as the story is mature enough to engross them but has mild themes with descriptive action to keep most readers engaged from start to finish.
