Sip lake written by author Joseph Basara is a story based in a fictitious place called Cypress City, Florida in the late 1970’s. It tells a story of an orderly named Owen Cloud or sometimes referred to as Red, working in a hospital on night shifts and later to day shifts. This story revolves around his interaction and experience with his colleagues, patients and other town folks.

The protagonist, Owen Cloud, is a 27-years-old hospital orderly who joins a hospital in Cypress city, Florida and starts working night shifts. There he starts his journey of personal growth and understanding of himself. This is a complex book which shows the intricacy of life, flaws in people and how they deal with it. The main character in the beginning feels lost and questions the meaning of life while tackling his fears and insecurities, but as the book progresses we can observe him accepting his personality and finding new direction in his life. The story also ply various references from the famous literatures, which gives the story an amusing twist.

The book shows as Owen experiences an array of emotions by the patients he cares for, their loss and story leaves him in sorrowful pondering. Owen also experiences infatuation and yearns for a connection, but later discovers it through the deep friendship and simplicity of loving someone through thick and thin. This story deals with tragedies of life and good fellowship in the society.

Overall, this book felt a little too slow paced for my liking and it also bothered me that some secondary characters were not explored further and were not given the depth their stories deserved. The editing of this book could have been better, but I do not think that the book is poorly written. For these aforementioned reasons I will rate this book 2 out of 4.
