Randy Love is trying to figure out life. As a handsome, charming, and self-proclaimed ladies’ man, he knows he can get any woman he wants. He soon finds, though, that the older he gets, the more his self-centered charm does not get the women he seeks, and he cannot understand why life keeps throwing him unfortunate luck. Through a series of failed endeavors with women, work, and roommates, Randy finds himself questioning who he is, and what could have changed between a few years ago and now.
Randy Love…At Your Service by Shay Carter is a tale of emerging adulthood and finding your place. If you find yourself at this time of life, or recently passed this time of life, this book is meant for you as a cautionary tale. With a 2 out of 4 stars, I found this book to be exceptionally well-written. Carter can weave a tapestry in your mind with beautiful descriptions and clever nuances that make you feel as though you are there watching Randy’s failed attempts with often disastrous consequences. I wish I could say the same about the editing. There were several minor errors, such as spelling (sceptical instead of skeptical) or missed commas, that should have already been addressed.
Carter’s character development was also excellent, though I wish we could have gotten to know his supporting character’s a little better. It was amusing and exciting to read how he was able to develop Randy Love’s personality through the trials he faced, as well as through Carter’s often mocking tone of his main character.
I could not, however, offer Randy Love…At Your Service a better rating for two reasons: too much time was spent building up Randy as a self-centered, lazy ladies’ man, that there was not enough time left for a possible redemption, and I found myself actively rooting against the main character. With so much time spent upon stories entailing Randy’s nature and failed exploits, I found myself confused and wondering if there was an actual plot to the book, or if this was to be a compilation of short stories. As the stories continued for far too long, I found that I began to not enjoy the character and I was hoping the book would end so I wouldn’t be stuck hearing about him anymore. I have read books where you did not have any admiration of the protagonist, but they always had a redeeming quality, and I struggled to find this in Randy. Though I loved Carter’s writing style, the story arc and the protagonist made this book long-suffering and tedious.
Randy Love…At Your Service by Shay Carter, is well-written, but lacking in editing and story development. I enjoyed quite a few aspects of this book, but I cannot recommend it to all. I would, however, love to read more from Shay Carter in the future and find him to be a gifted author. Keep an eye out for Carter—he has the makings of a promising career.
