Randy Love…at your service is a fictional and comical book about a young man in his twenties. In it you will encounter many British words and sayings like Numpty, Hobnobs or Dipping your wick (if you know what those words mean then you already have a good outline of the story). The scenario is very centered around the protagonist: Randy Love. In the story, you can find the themes of life and love, all of it written in a descriptive yet very familiar way.
Randy is a physically very attractive man but a real jerk in terms of dating, he is also quite lazy which will bring him to have a series of problems. Fortunately, he can also be smart and methodical, those qualities helping him to resurface after tough times. The way he tries to fix those problems is a big part of the story, but it is not too invading, and we also get to see different sides of Randy’s life. To sum it up, the author describes in detail a man with a bit more of an exciting life than the average person. We learn about every facet of his life without censure: his family, friends, conquests, jobs, living situations and I could go on. At no time do we leave Randy’s side of the story and it is nearly a day to day diary of his whereabouts and movements.
What I liked about this book is that even though it has no tension or suspense, it has an inviting writing which doesn’t make the reading boring. The author used a familiar style of narration which really puts the readers in the main character’s head. Because the story is based in England and I am guessing that Shay Carter is British there are a lot of British slang which makes it really funny and puts us in the context of the story, you can also find at the end of the book an index with the meanings of those expressions, a very considerate thought of the author.
However, there is no true story plot, and until the very end, I did not know what I was waiting for to happen to our main character. Even though it was eventful, the lack of suspense made it not gripping and I could have easily stopped reading at any moment and not wonder what would happen next. This is the reason I give it a 3 out of 4 stars. Another negative point for me is that there are many characters introduced in the early chapters and personally it was a bit hard to follow at first because I would get confused due to the many names presented at once, but I eventually caught up so I do not think it is that much of an issue in the long run.
As a whole, I think Randy Love…at your service is an interesting story in the form of a fictional and very descriptive biography. I believe that it may be suitable for people who do not like action or science-fiction, but who enjoy comical fictions with some light romance. This book is mainly for young adults and adults, but I would not advise children to read it because of some erotic passages.
