In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes (Scott Hughes) gives an alternative approach to finding inner peace. This book touts how unconditional love is a crucial uniting force in understanding the human condition. For those needing an identity boost, Hughes clearly states someone who is free-spirited is also self-disciplined. Step by step, the book lays out the path to forgiveness, peace, and freedom without sacrificing or compromising your current belief system.

Hughes insists the journey to inner peace starts with knowing who you are. And you’d be surprised, because who you are, “the real you,” is eternal. The book thoroughly explains the metaphysics of existence. Your true self does not include anything material. You are not your possessions, occupation, education, or bank account balance. Not even your clothes or hair really define you. As Hughes mentions, material things represent the artificial you. You can take off clothes or lose your job, but your spirit endures.

Regardless of how much suffering exists in the world, the spirit, what truly makes us who we are, is durable through time and space. The book advocates an accepting, open-minded perspective. I found it to be a gentle yet firm approach to healing inner suffering and tolerating the suffering of others. In It Together explains a beautiful struggle in which we live accepting that everything is the way it should be. Healing comes only after acceptance of the natural order.

My rating for In It Together is five out of five stars. There isn’t anything I didn’t like about the book, and it certainly put my deepest values about identity into ponderance after I read this book. I gave a perfect rating because it’s suitable and follows a universal approach to belief systems. In It Together highlights the common struggle for which the title refers to: all humans know what suffering is like, but it is this universal suffering experience which can lead to a universal path of understanding and healing. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in philosophy.
