There is one thing I envy, and that is a person with a loving family. Personally, family is everything and having a loving and supporting one makes life a bit less terrifying. I cannot categorize myself among people who grew up with affectionate family members. What I would like to have as an adult is my own family. Among the characters in the book is Barbara. I liked this character because I would like to have such a loving family as she had made. Family is not solely blood relations, you might find people who are not related to you, but they are more of a family than you can ever imagine. John E. Peltier, the author, has written a memoir of his family history, describing most of the details that entailed his family. The Thundering Herd describes what it was like growing in the 1950s on a farm. The author has combined his war stories in Vietnam with his family stories.

What I liked most about The Thundering Herd are the childhood stories, they made me miss home and the time when I was young and things were a bit simple. This book also has information about farming and cattle keeping. The reader can enjoy great stories, as they gain information about farming too. I also like love stories, and this offers that too. Following the life history of John E. Peltier is fulfilling, and by the end of the book, he is old and blessed with so many grandkids. The author is the fifth of twelve children who are in this family. The title of the book does justice to it. I did not expect to enjoy someone’s family history, but apparently, I found this quite engaging.

There is nothing I disliked about this book. The beginning section was a bit bland, but as I continued reading, I got engrossed and could not stop. This book describes the regular day-to-day life of a family as the years pass, but this one is on a farm, hence more possibility of an exciting day. Most kids who have grown up in cities may find this book full of amazing stories. I don’t think city life is as fascinating as this.

This book falls under the category of memoirs, and I highly recommend it to young adults and adults. Individuals who have grown up with so many siblings may find some parts of this book relatable. There are countable errors, but that doesn’t affect how enthralling and captivating the book is.

I award this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars because I found the book astounding and exceptionally written.
