The book, Randy Love at your Service written by Shay Carter, tells about a young man who was born into a loving well-adjusted family. He was the last of three children. His parents had had their family life already planned out. He, Randy, was not part of the initial plan. His coming surprised both his middle aged parents. Both parents had great expectations of their children. Randy, being the last of the three, was always very different from his siblings, full of energy and with a short attention span. As a young man he struggled to live up to such expectations while his siblings did well with ease.
This book focused mainly on Randy’s life. I think that this book was beautifully written, for the most part. I was very much impressed by the author’s use of words and his ability to expose, and deposit in this book the many and varying issues of life. As a result of that, it was easy to relate to the characters in this book. This made reading it easy and enjoyable. The author was able to take his reader on an excursion that was filled with emotions. Joy, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, surprise, disappointment, betrayal, suspense and so much more was a part of this reading experience. I liked those things about the book.
On the other hand, the book contained few errors. On page 16 line 4 the author said, “as Randy reversed out of the drive John congratulated himself on a job well done”. On the same page the author wrote putting uni on hold for a year. On page 19 line 8 I read, “grabbing a quick ciggie between shifts”. On page 77 line 12 the author wrote, ‘‘Well, there’s the Marriott, of course, or it that’s too rich for your blood there are a couple of reasonable bed and breakfasts nearby.’ How do know you like someone if you don’t really know them?’ was written on page 77 line 21.
The author however failed to hold my interest to the end of the book. That was so because the scenarios in the book became repetitious. Only the characters changed. After reading half of the book it was easy to tell what happens next. The book became monotonous. I continued to read only to see if that trend continued. In my view it did, and that was disappointing.
I particularly did not enjoy the use of profanity in this book. The first profane word can be seen on page 110 line 19. It was continued throughout the book, though not excessively. I also did not like the explicit scenes expressed in this book for example on page 127 from line 9 to the paragraph before the last on page128.
As a reader, I have an appreciation for the ‘Index of British Terminology and Slang’ included at the end of the book. It allowed the reader to understand the slangs used by the author.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because of the errors, the use of profanity, and its repetitious inclination. .
I will strongly recommend this book to young adults who may simply be interested in being entertained.
