The First Ten Focus Group Feedback for Global Vice

Because Global Vice was Book of the Day, some of our most trusted members have carefully looked over the cover, the description, and other aspects of this book as a part of purchase-intent focus group. We then asked each participant in the focus group if they planned to buy and read the book, and why they planned to buy and read the book or not. Their answer to that question and reasons are displayed below. We call this awesome feature The First Ten Focus Group.

Keep in mind, the responses from the members are not reviews. This is purchase-intent focus group which means the participants are people who have NOT yet bought or read your book. A purchase-intent focus group is an important and extremely useful marketing tool for any product, not just books. For other products, you might walk on the street and show people an item in a package and poll them about whether they would buy if or $X or not. These kind of focus groups are one of the ways big marketing companies find the ideal price points for products and test the effectiveness of different packaging. The focus group can help you identify your market so you how to target ads of your book, and it can (but may not) provide you new useful info about your "packaging" (e.g. your book cover, your book synopsis on Amazon, etc.). The point of the focus group comments is to give you information from people who have not bought or read your book about why they plan to buy your book which will help you in marketing the book. These are not reviews or critiques of your book because they are not from people have read the book. This is a marketing tool, not reviews. The trick of book marketing and book advertising is that you have to convince people who have not read your book yet that your book is worth buying and reading. For marketing, it doesn't matter much if people love your book after reading it if you cannot convince potential buyers before they read it that they will love it.

IMPORTANT: Any score over 10% is considered very good. And any score above 0% is acceptable. This is because we only poll about 20 or so readers, and all readers have to say "no" to almost all books. Over a million books are published each year. Even a very active reader cannot come close to even reading 1% of books out there.

This is also why publishing books is such a tough industry.

The book highlights the themes of human trafficking and sex slavery and points out the menace these inhumane acts create. At the heart of the novel, we have characters who own a security firm called COMSEC, and the narrative follows them as they take up the war against human traffickers aided by the most advanced artificial intelligence. I wouldn't have sampled or read the book based on its blurb and customer reviews (which are positive, by the way) because the themes didn't intrigue me right away. The book has some intense action scenes, which will thrill the readers who like crime thrillers and action sequences. What I liked the most was that there are well-thought-out details about the location of events, and the author is clearly adept at vivid storytelling while using the characters to outline a series of background details. The book is narrated in first-person by one of the lead characters, Ben Alexander, and the story starts off with him getting badly beat up as he was trying to open a safe. This gives the book a thrilling undertone from the get-go. I liked how the author used Ben to portray the details of all the events and characters, including his partner, Nickolas Zelenko. We also get to know how their bond grew and how they ended up merging their companies. The narrative is wholesome and takes into account every little detail for good characterization. The text also seems to have been well edited, and I would rate the book as professionally edited. I wouldn't suggest anything for improvement based on what I have read. I noticed that the chapters are segmented into smaller sections, and divisions are carefully placed so as not to interfere with the flow of the narrative. There's a useful official OBC review for the book that I read before sampling. And based on that and the sample, I have decided to not read the whole book, mainly because I don't think I will keep engaged with the action scenes and really enjoy the narration. The official OBC review definitely helped make this decision.

By just looking at the cover photo, it looks like this book is full of action, so I read the sample right away. The narrative has a fast-paced structure, which I really adore. Though I don't like the profane words, the dilemma of Ben, who was caught up when trying to decode the vault, makes me want to follow his faith. I will read this book because the OBC review is also quite convincing. The Amazon reviews were quite helpful in my decision to read this book, too. There's nothing I can recommend for improvement, and I don't notice any errors.

Had I not been a part of this program, I still would have read the book based on the genre, premise, OBC review, and other published reviews. I found no errors in the first ten pages. The chapters alternated between Ben and Nicholas's POV. Ben is brutally attacked by two thugs while on a mission. I loved how the author pulled the readers right in the middle of a tense scene. I had no suggestions for improvement. Based on my reading experience, I would read the whole book.

Andrew Rafkin's "Global Vice" is an interesting-looking book. The cover is eye-catching, with a promise of action and thrillers. The blurb is brilliant; it gave me a peek while not revealing much about the plot. The cover and the blurb, combined with the genre and customer reviews, would have attracted me to sample the book, which hooked me more to the novel after reading it. I'm now very curious to find out who beat Ben that badly and why. Ben's relationship with Allison is also one of the aspects I liked about the book, adding a bit of romance to the story. There was nothing I disliked in the few pages I read. The OBC review highly praises the book, which further encouraged my decision to buy this book in the future. I didn't find any errors while reading.

Even without this program, I would have read this. The official review from OnlineBookClub, the cover, the blurb, and the ratings on Amazon are fine. The topic of human trafficking is also my cup of tea.

I like the computing theme. However, the plot is a bit incoherent. For example, I don't understand why Ben must try to hack the safe and how that connects to his security company. The writing style is not to my taste either. It's a bit too dull, and the pace is slow. I would suggest a more exciting start. I don't think I'm keen on reading the rest of the book, so I won't buy it. The editing is alright. The OBC review was helpful, but I made my decision after sampling the book.

Error example: She smiled. "Have a nice nap? -> There should be a closing quotation mark at the end of the sentence.

If I was not in this program, I would have bought "Global Vice" if I found it on Amazon because I'm a fan of action thrillers. Ben and Nickolas are putting themselves in grave danger with their security company, COSMEC. In the OBC official review, the reviewer never mentioned Ben's or Nickolas's name, only a Russian mafia boss, so I'm glad that I read the Amazon sample to find out who these characters are. In my reading, I was impressed with Nickolas's ability (as a techy myself) to create his own AI assistant named EVE. I'm going to buy the full book and finish this story because, with both Ben's and Nickolas's brain power and creativity, I would like to see how far they will take their company.
I found no errors or anything I disliked bout this book.

I would not have sampled this book based on the genre, OBC review, cover, title, or customer reviews. This book involving human trafficking didn't seem to be something I would be interested in. After reading the first ten pages, I won't be finishing the first ten pages. I liked that the sections are labelled with the dates. This is super helpful when trying to keep the timeline straight. I also appreciated that it started off right away with action with the two guys coming in with the gun. However, I didn't like the amount of profanity that it started out with. I thought this was a little overboard and could use some improvement. The first paragraph had a least three instances of profanity. This and the actual storyline were what turned me away. The book did seem to be professionally edited; I didn't see any errors in the first ten pages.

The man is trying to crack a safe, but to no avail, until two guys come behind him and point guns. They ask him what he’s doing, and he answers without confidence, and they punch him in the stomach. He still doesn’t cooperate, so they know he's unconscious. He wakes up in an unfamiliar place. He reaches for his phone and calls his associate. This is the bit I deduced from the first ten pages. I liked how easily the scenes were captured. This enabled the story to move forward while retaining its sense of mystery. There was nothing I disliked about it. I won’t be reading it because I don’t like books featuring artificial intelligence. I didn’t think much about the title because it didn’t give much away, unlike the cover. I would not have chosen this book if it weren’t for the programme. My decision was influenced by the official review from OBC. The book had no errors.

Neither the cover nor the title interested me. I thought the gun-toting silhouettes were too cliche. The blurb convinced me that this book was not for me with its crime subject matter. The OBC review mentioned human trafficking, which is not something I like to read about. I did not see any errors. I liked the way the author organized the scenes with different points of view. I thought the scene at the diner was realistic. I am not going to finish reading the book because I know I would get confused with all the computer details and involved relationships. I do not have any suggestions

I got fascinated after seeing the cover, title, and genre of this book. So I would have read the reviews of this book outside The First Ten program. I saw a few customer reviews and an editorial review on Amazon praising the book. The OBC official review gave me clear insights into this book. This book needs a round of professional editing. I say so because I found several grammatical mistakes in the sample. For example, the sentence, "Beyond that, in my peripheral vision, I saw this guy with long, slicked-back hair and dark menacing eyes looking down the sight of the gun, and another huge bald dude with a full boxed beard and a creepy smile standing next to him." This sentence could have been as follows. "Beyond that, in my peripheral vision, I saw this guy with long, slicked-back hair and dark menacing eyes looking down the sight of the gun and another huge bald dude with a full boxed beard and a creepy smile standing next to him." I will not buy and read this book today because I could not visualize the scenes clearly from its descriptions. My suggestion to the author is to provide me with adequate details of the scenes in the narrative. I liked the way the AI located the location of Ben’s cell. I learned that Ben was seeking help from Nickolas to get himself rescued.

This book's cover, title, and genre caught my eye, so I would have checked this book out outside the First Ten Program. The blurb, customer reviews, editorial reviews, and the OnlineBookClub review did not impact my decision. I disliked that part of the first ten pages was unrealistic. For example, Ben felt hungry after he was beaten so badly that he could hardly get up and walk because of pain and nausea. However, I liked that the author provided information about Ben's and Nickolas's education and relationship. The first ten pages appear professionally edited, as I saw no errors. I have no recommendations for the author. I will eventually finish reading this book because I enjoyed reading the first ten pages.

This book's description piqued my interest. I would have wanted to read it if I wasn't enrolled in this program. After reading the sample, I realized that the tale seemed to revolve around Ben being robbed, which seemed to take up too much time. Because of this, I found the beginning to be somewhat uninteresting and predictable. The book's overly direct descriptive language turned me off as well. Nothing about this book appeals to me based on this sample. In my opinion, the description pretty much gave away the entire narrative, so it wasn't that exciting. I won't finish reading the book, even though the official OBC review gave it good praise. I didn't find any errors in this book.

As a fan of action-packed thrillers, I would have read the book based on the genre, blurb, title, customer reviews, and editorial reviews. Unfortunately, I changed my mind after reading the OBC review and the first three chapters. The story follows the dangerous journey of Ben Alexander, Nickolas Zelenko, and Allison McBride as they are on a mission to bring Aleskey Dragunov to justice and put an end to his international criminal activities. I liked I was thrown into the action from the very beginning and found the dialogues realistic; however, the writing style was too descriptive for my taste, which prevented me from getting invested in the story. Plus, I would suggest another round of editing; I noticed some distracting errors. For example, it should be written "different" instead of "deferent" in the following sentence: "Is the burglar alarm partitioned, with deferent keypads and codes to enter specific areas, and when armed or disarmed a signal would be recorded at your central station?" (location 416 of 513 • 80%) It should be "were" instead of "was" in the following sentence: "When I finally got back to my seat, a glass of water and a cup of coffee was waiting for me." (location 107 of 513 • 13%) It should be "I am glad" in the following sentence: "I glad your friend got here." (location 120 of 513 • 16%) l would also suggest that the author change the cover. I found it a bit misleading; in fact, if not for the blurb, I would have thought it was a science-fiction novel.

The book makes a decent first impression with its attractive cover design, straightforward title, detailed description, and multiple customer and OBC reviews. Since the book is a fiction thriller, I was excited to read the sample. The OBC review spoke about the mafia angle, which piqued my interest. That said, I loved the simple writing style of the author. There were some minor grammatical errors, but nothing that would affect my reading experience (I should have brought his ass with me; {add 'to'} see how he’d like to sit here for this long.). Unfortunately, since I do not have the required funds or a free trial in Kindle Unlimited, I will not be able to buy this book. I have no suggestions because had I been able to afford the book, I would have loved reading it.

Prior to now, I was not a part of this program, but I am now, and I like it. Yes, based on the book's cover, editorial reviews, and customer reviews, I would have read or at least looked at the sample. Yes, after reading the first page, I would like to purchase and read it. As I read the first ten pages, I found no errors. As I read and liked, I learned that humanity's insatiable desire for more is what drives it to go for what it wants at all costs, regardless of the cost to other people's lives. The author makes it crystal clear that greed can have severely negative consequences. When Luka and Yuri were kidnapped for more money, they believed they had the appropriate connections. They failed to remember that when greed is in your eyes, every decision you make will be disastrously incorrect. I found nothing too negative to mention, dislike, or complain about in the first ten pages of this book. Yes, the OBC review helped me, as a reader, decide whether to buy this book.

I did not find the book cover captivating, but the title is decent. The blurb hinted at a thrilling plot. There were a few positive Amazon customer comments. The official OBC review was well-written and descriptive. The sample pages were compelling; I liked the narration style and the suspense build-up. I was eager to read further and find out who beat up Alexander and why. I also enjoyed the concept of Artificial General Intelligence, EVE. I couldn't find anything I disliked about the book. However, since I have been reading about AI and its involvement in fighting criminal activities in other books, I want to take a break from this theme. I will not buy this book. I found no errors in the first ten pages.

I tried to scrutinize the cover, and it looks mysterious with all its elements. The title sounds broad, and I can see from the blurb that the narrative seems unfit for me since it contains sensitive topics that I'm not into. There's nothing wrong with the book overall. It's about my liking the books. The editorial review was wonderfully written, but from its summary, the book is not for me. The book is unavailable on Amazon. It is only available on B&N, but there are no customer reviews. For these reasons, it somehow affects me towards reading the book, but I gave it a chance and sampled it. I conclude that the narrative is not right up my alley. Unfortunately, after reading the first ten pages, I decided not to buy the book or read the whole of it because of the reasons I previously mentioned. The first ten pages are impeccable. What I liked in a bit I read was the simple tone the author used. As far as I know, the book contains themes like human trafficking and child-sex slavery, which don't suit me, and it's disheartening for me. I'll pass on these themes. What I dislike in a bit of what I read is the numerous profanities, but I know it's fine for others. For now, I have no suggestions in mind for improving the book because I believe it is already a masterpiece for those interested in it. Yes, the OBC review made me realize that this book is not for me, and I decided not to buy it for now.

Following my poring over the book’s official OBC review and Amazon page, I opted not to purchase the thriller. I am not fascinated by how Aleskey Dragunov, a wealthy Russian mafia oligarch, managed to become a leader of chains of criminal organizations in over nine countries around the world. I am not intrigued by the repercussions that Dragunov's errand guys' would face after they kidnapped one of COMSEC's partners. I am not interested in learning how the novel would give a thorough and elaborate expose on the evils of child/human trafficking and child-sex slavery through the characters in the story. Sampling the title failed to change my mind. I would not acquire it because nothing in the Amazon sample convinced me I would enjoy perusing the rest of the book. The first ten pages contain the first chapter and some pages of the second chapter. What I liked most is when Ben started assessing the damage he sustained after he was attacked by two men. I did not note any errors in the sample. The book seems professionally edited. I have no advice to offer to the author.

If it wasn't for this program, I would still sample this book based on its title, cover, genre, blurb, OnlineBookClub review, and other reviews because I love thrillers, and I liked that this book dealt such an important issue (child trafficking). My favorite part of what I read was the transitions between the different points of view. Even though the book was narrated by different characters, it was always very easy to know who was narrating, and the story never lost its flow. After reading the first ten pages, I will read the rest of the book because there was nothing I disliked, and I thought the story was worth reading. I don't think the book needs improvement. In Location 178, there's a missing closing quotation mark (“Have a nice nap?).

I like the cover and title of this book. I would certainly pick it up in a bookstore or click on it online to check it out. I would not have known about this book if not for OBC. The OBC review was very positive but confused me when it mentioned that "over 4.2 billion or more of the world's population is still plunged neck-deep into modernized slavery." Obviously, this can't be true; that's more than half the population of the planet! This makes me question the authenticity of the whole review. The OBC review alone would not excite me to read this book; however, the synopsis on Amazon makes it sound like a fantastic future action movie! The Amazon reviews were also great. I really enjoyed reading the sample of this book and most certainly want to continue reading. There was nothing I disliked. So far, it's been a very fast-paced and exciting read. The cover, title, and blurb all suggest a thriller. Customer feedback is positive. Based on the description, the book appears to me like an introduction to the key characters in a series. Because I prefer standalone stories, I was not interested enough to try the book outside of the program. I did not change my mind after sampling. I liked how it addressed current and pertinent societal issues, including human trafficking, cyber security, and artificial intelligence. However, the story began a bit slowly for my taste. For thrillers, I prefer a faster pace and more intense action. It also looks to be more focused on the romance component. I prefer a more subtle approach to this area, more like a simmering element in the plot. Hence, I will pass. These are matters of preference. I am positive that it will appeal to a more appreciative audience. Aside from that, I do not have any suggestions for improvement. On the sampled pages, I noticed no issues with editing. I read the first ten pages of this novel, and I didn't really find anything to like. It seemed to be all about Ben being beaten up in Burbank and waking up in Commerce City, only to be rescued by his friend Nikolas. On the plus side, I  didn't find any errors in what I read, and I couldn't pinpoint anything that I disliked either. Normally I like C/T/M/H (it's my favorite genre), but I won't be finishing this even though the OBC reviewer gave it five stars and recommended it. "Global Vice" is a thriller written by Andrew J. Rafkin. Nikolas and Ben are the owners of COMSEC, an information and cyber security company. But for the First Ten, I would have been intrigued by the cover, the title, and the genre but I would not have sampled or read this book because the blurb and editorial and customer reviews suggest that it is a book about the Russian mafia and human trafficking, and I am not interested in this topic. Sampling the first ten pages, I liked Nickolas’ AI EVE, but I did not like the excessive profanity. I did not find errors and have no suggestions for improvement. I thought the cover was somewhat interesting, and I probably would have picked up the book off a shelf for a closer look had I seen it in a store. However, I didn't think much of the Official OBC Review. The review was well written, but I had to read it twice in an attempt to find out what the book was about. The story synopsis was vague and the review was devoted more to the theme and the reviewer's commentary. Subsequently, it did nothing to convince me to read this. I ended up going to the Amazon site to read the synopsis, which did a heck of a better job explaining the story. I didn't bother to read any other reviews or blurbs. I read the first ten pages and, as of right now, I'm not going to say that I will read this book. I'm a bit tired of books that focus heavily on artificial intelligence. But this is a case in which I wish there was a "maybe" category. What I read was extremely well done. The characters seem terrific and the dialogue worked very well. I particularly liked the way in which the author opened the story with some action before going into the background of the characters and the company. I believe the book to be professionally edited, although I did find one error in the pages that I read. On page 14, the paragraph that begins, "I opened my swollen eyes..." is missing quotation marks at the end of the paragraph. I have no recommendations for improvement.

I was immediately captivated by Global Vice, written by Andrew J. Rafkin, when I stumbled upon it in a Facebook post. The book's description, the comments from other readers, and even its cover photo sparked my curiosity and compelled me to delve into its pages. The cover photo itself depicted a thrilling and action-packed scene, which aligns perfectly with my preferred genres. Furthermore, the title hinted at a narrative that delves into the prevalent acts of criminality and deviant behavior within contemporary society. Had I not been part of the first ten program, based on the enticing elements I've described, I would still be eager to read or at least sample the book. Now that I have completed the first ten pages, I am convinced to purchase and fully immerse myself in the rest of the story. Merely experiencing the beginning left me yearning for more, and I am eager to continue reading. Since I only obtained a sample, which was the free version, I will proceed to buy the complete book.

Upon reading the first ten pages, I did not come across any grammatical errors or typos. The tone, perspectives employed, and the pace at which the story unfolded greatly appealed to me. There was nothing in the book that I found displeasing.

The book commences with a tense and action-packed scene involving Ben Alexander's struggle to unlock a safe. He is then confronted by a group of thugs who point their guns at him, interrogate him about his motives and affiliations, and mercilessly assault him using firearms, a sledgehammer, and kicks. Ben is left brutally injured, with visible disfigurement, abandoned in an alley. In his dire situation, he manages to reach out to Nickolas for help, who promptly comes to his aid as a friend. Nickolas learns of Ben's location through Eve, who reveals that he is in the alley behind Andy's Coffee Shop. Ben requests that Nickolas join him at the location, as he wishes to find sustenance at Andy's Coffee Shop.

The book has received an OBC review, which I found particularly compelling. In fact, it was the excerpt of the review shared on the book's Facebook post that initially caught my attention before I proceeded to explore the cover photo and read people's comments, all of which reaffirmed my preference for action-packed narratives. Therefore, the existence of the OBC review played a significant role in shaping my decision, as it provided my initial impression of the book.

The title and cover of the book are both appealing, and I would choose to read it based on them. I read the Official OnlineBookClub review, the blurb, the editor review, and the customer reviews, but they did not influence my decision. I intend to read the book because the plot appears to be both intriguing and logical. I found no errors or typos while reading the book, thus it appears to have been professionally edited. I like how Ben got his start in the alarm system business since it seems sensible. Nothing in the book, in my opinion, needs to be improved.

Global Vice has a beautiful cover and a fascinating blurb. I would definitely sample the book! The OBC review was very positive, and after reading the first few pages, I understand why. The book deals with the serious subject of human trafficking, offering a thrilling adventure to the reader. The character cast is unique, and the narrative is fluent. My only criticism is that the main character's backstory was introduced hastily and felt forced. I would prefer a more gradual introduction throughout the story. Other than that, the book is incredible, and the editing is flawless. I am intrigued and looking forward to purchasing a copy and finishing this novel!

I was initially interested in this book from the title, cover, description, genre, customer reviews, and the official OnlineBookClub review. However, I changed my mind after reading the first few pages, so I’ll not buy and read this book. Although this book had a strong beginning and I was eager to know more about Ben, why he was trying to break into a safe, and why he was suddenly attacked by two goons, I got bored as the story continued. I didn’t like how the story suddenly went into a lengthy flashback about how Alison became a partner in their office. I wish the author had shortened this flashback; it took away all the previous interest I had in reading this book. This book seems professionally edited because I didn’t notice any typos.

The cover looks too sci-fi-like to catch my attention. The blurb presents a high-stakes plot well, though I'd rather AI wasn't involved. It makes me anxious. Therefore, despite the high ratings, I wouldn't have bought the book based on my first impressions.
The first ten pages didn't change my mind. It's hard to feel sorry for Ben because there wasn't even an introduction, and Nickolas's nonchalant attitude towards his friend getting beat up threw me off. I also didn't like the portrayal of the AI as a "striking woman dressed in tight jeans and a halter top enhancing her Sports-Illustrated-swimsuit-model figure." There was a show in the 90s with an AI exactly like this one. It seems juvenile and a bit misogynistic. On the plus side, I didn't find editing mistakes. I suggest adding a couple of pages introducing the characters because it's hard to get invested otherwise. The official OBC review didn't change my mind.

I was not initially intrigued by the cover and title of “Global Vice.” These details convey a sense of science-fiction and crime that does not appeal to me, as it seems a bit too ‘James Bond.’ The genre is identified as a thriller, which I usually enjoy. The blurb and OBC review talk about modern-day slavery and human trafficking, which is too heavy of a topic for me to enjoy reading this book.

I found no objective errors in the sample pages. I did not enjoy the sample portion of this book, it was too action-packed from the start for my liking, and there was a lot of foul language. I was intrigued by EVE, the AI system that Nickolas used and created. Her ‘seductive’ voice was a bit too far, in my opinion. I have no recommendations for the author, as this type of book is not for me, as I am not the target audience. I will not be finishing this book, as I did not enjoy the narrative.

Total ~ 38%

Global Vice earned a score of 38%.

In other words, out of the top-level reviewers who read at least the first 10 pages of this book, 38% plan to read the whole book.

IMPORTANT: Any score over 10% is considered very good. And any score above 0% is acceptable.

Over a million books are published each year. Any given person could not even read .0001% of the books out there. This means readers have to be very selective. Even taking the time to look over reviews and blurbs, let alone read samples, is more time than most readers can afford for most books. The First Ten is a powerful focus group that addresses those issues. It creates a helpful tool for authors, publishers, and other readers.
