The First Ten Focus Group Feedback for Heat:: Bad Boy Vibes #2
Because Heat: was Book of the Day, some of our most trusted members have carefully looked over the cover, the description, and other aspects of this book as a part of purchase-intent focus group. We then asked each participant in the focus group if they planned to buy and read the book, and why they planned to buy and read the book or not. Their answer to that question and reasons are displayed below. We call this awesome feature The First Ten Focus Group.
Keep in mind, the responses from the members are not reviews. This is purchase-intent focus group which means the participants are people who have NOT yet bought or read your book. A purchase-intent focus group is an important and extremely useful marketing tool for any product, not just books. For other products, you might walk on the street and show people an item in a package and poll them about whether they would buy if or $X or not. These kind of focus groups are one of the ways big marketing companies find the ideal price points for products and test the effectiveness of different packaging. The focus group can help you identify your market so you how to target ads of your book, and it can (but may not) provide you new useful info about your "packaging" (e.g. your book cover, your book synopsis on Amazon, etc.). The point of the focus group comments is to give you information from people who have not bought or read your book about why they plan to buy your book which will help you in marketing the book. These are not reviews or critiques of your book because they are not from people have read the book. This is a marketing tool, not reviews. The trick of book marketing and book advertising is that you have to convince people who have not read your book yet that your book is worth buying and reading. For marketing, it doesn't matter much if people love your book after reading it if you cannot convince potential buyers before they read it that they will love it.
IMPORTANT: Any score over 10% is considered very good. And any score above 0% is acceptable. This is because we only poll about 20 or so readers, and all readers have to say "no" to almost all books. Over a million books are published each year. Even a very active reader cannot come close to even reading 1% of books out there.
This is also why publishing books is such a tough industry.

The first part was featured on OBC, but I don't have a high opinion about it so I wouldn't have sampled the second part without this program. The cover is once again just a bait, something totally different from the summary. The prologue was better than I had expected, the characters finally weren't that flat. The problem with the rest is the same as with the first part, though. There is too much description compared to dialogue lines, which makes the story extremely boring to read. Almost nothing happens and things that do happen are hardly connected to the summary. I'm aware that it's just the beginning, but that's what the first impression is all about, so that's hardly an excuse. At least the book seems edited. I won't be buying it, any positive reviews can't convince me otherwise.

I would not have sampled this book without this program. I do like the genre, but this is the second book in the series, and I didn't want to read the first one. There also isn't a review for the book, and I don't normally read books that don't have a review. After reading the first ten pages, I won't be finishing the book. I did like that I didn't notice any errors in the book so far. The first book had errors right away. However, I didn't really like the style of writing as I thought it was a little awkward. This could probably be fixed to flow better. I also am just not into the story.

Prior to reading the sample, I had no interest in this book. I don’t care for romance novels and I found the cover and blurb unappealing. My mind has not changed after reading the sample.
The book begins with a story I have heard before, one that therefore wasn’t shocking or very interesting while reading. While it introduced the characters effectively, it felt very cliched and therefore left me with no connection to the characters themselves. The book seems professionally edited, but the writing often tells readers the story rather than showing them, which ultimately makes it less enjoyable to read. I would suggest the author change how she introduces information to improve the novel. I would also suggest showing the character’s PTSD in a more original manner.

At first glance, I would not have picked up this book. First, I'm not a romance fan, so the genre is not for me. Second, it's a sequel to a book I also haven't read. After reading the first ten pages, I found that the writing was good and it seemed to be professionally edited. I didn't find any errors in the sample. The positive reviews lead me to believe that this would be a great read for someone who enjoys erotic romance. However, I am not the target market for this story, so I will not be finishing the book.

The story starts with a beautiful narration of the love
of a woman for her man. The pace in which she quickens
her ride across the Victoria's parch land makes the
reader stay with her, and enjoy the ride. But I found
that the intricate feelings of the couple have been
narrated in a very wordy fashion, which could be cut down
a bit in the beginning of the story, so that the reader
is more motivated to enjoy the thrill of the story.
I didn't find any mechanical errors and the formatting
of the book looks just fine. Eventually, towards the
end of the sampling, I lost interest in the book, so I
am not going to read this book in full. I didn't find any
OBC review of the book, but my decision to not to read
the book in full is based on my own sampling.

I already submitted a review for this, but I guess it didn't go through? I thought the cover was boring because it is the same as the first one. This also goes for the title. There was no creativity put into it. I didn't like the sample of the first in the series, so I'm a bit biased as to not wanting to read this one. There was no OBC review that I saw, but that was fine. I thought the writing of this sample was only slightly better than the first. I was really lost because it is a second, so I think a recap would have been nice. Again, the author does not connect the readers to the characters, and the writing is super choppy and cliche. I didn't see any editorial issues. I will not be reading this one.

I wasn't a fan of the first book, and it's for the same reasons I was worried about this one - it's a romance novel and deals with rape. I'm typically not a fan of romance novels in general, and while I've luckily never been sexually abused, rape is something I have a really difficult time reading about. This time both of the main characters have a history of being raped, and the entire first ten pages is affected by that. The writing is excellent so far and incredibly emotional, the author clearly has skills there. I also didn't see any errors whatsoever, although there was one point where Anna asked Rafe something and it was a page later after a bunch of non-dialogue before he replied. It was so spaced out that I had to go back looking for what was being asked, and that threw me off a bit. Overall, while I'd recommend it to romance fans so far, it's definitely not my kind of book.

Without this program, I would not have sampled this book. For similar reasons of yesterday's book. Partially unclothed people on book covers are unappealing to me. This one also is not very distinguishable from the previous cover, and I would suggest to update the cover to better distinguish one book with the first in the series. In addition, since I don't plan to read the first in the series, I wouldn't read this one either. The blurb is fairly lengthy and isn't of interest to me. Even with no official OBC review and the somewhat mixed customer reviews, I still wouldn't have sampled this read.
While reading, I didn't see any glaring errors. I like the concept that both Anna and Rafe are broken souls together. It makes their relationship have an interesting dynamic. However, I do feel somewhat confused with the sequence of events, including the fight that will happen and Anna leaving to return. I think I'm missing something since I didn't read the first one. In any case, since this book touches on harsh topics like rape and I don't plan to read the first in the series, I don't plan on reading this one either.

The similarity of the cover to book one shows this is a part of a series. I would not have selected this book to read for several reasons. Firstly, I do not tend to read the second book in a series before I read the first book. Secondly, I do not enjoy the romance genre. Finally, I am not comfortable reading a romance novel which is centred around rape. The blurb informed me that this topic plays a large part in the book and, therefore, it is not subject I am wanting to read about at present. The first ten did not make me feel like this could be read as a stand-alone story. I felt like I had missed a lot by not reading book 1 first. Due to this I did not feel engaged with the story. The writing appeared professionally edited. I do not intend to read the rest of the book for the 3 reasons stated above.

I previously sampled the first installment in this series, 'Heartaches', and I didn't care to read any more of the book. Based on my experience with the first book, I wouldn't choose to purchase 'Heartaches 2.' An OBC review wouldn't sway my opinion in this case because I didn't care for the content of the first book, and this book seems similar. After sampling the first ten pages, my opinion didn't change. The sample for 'Heartaches 2' was a lot like the sample for the first installment: the narrative is well written, but the content and romantic/erotic themes just don't interest me. I don't plan to read anymore of this book.

I would not have picked this up because the cover makes it look like an erotica and it is the sequel to a book I have not read. Compared to the first book, the blurb was detailed and provided enough information so I did not feel the need to read an OBC review. After reading the first ten pages, I can say that this book is professionally edited. The story starts out with a scene that I feel has been overplayed, a person has a nightmare which turns into something dangerous. The blurb also mentions that this book deals with sensitive subjects such as rape. Therefore, it is not my cup of tea and I do not intend to read the rest.

From the cover, blurb, and review of this book, I would not have read it. I read the sample of the first in the trilogy and wasn’t really drawn in to it. After reading the first ten pages, I almost changed my mind, but did not. I like the fact that this second book seemed to have more body to it rather than simply being a smutty/erotic/abusive romance book. There were real tensions and relationships along with passion. From what I sampled, the book even looked well written and edited with not much that I would have changed. That being said, the genre really doesn’t appeal to me and definitely not enough to buy and read the rest of this book. The lack of an official review did not affect my decision at all.

This is not a book I would have normally read. I am not a fan of romance novels. After reading the sample, I have the same opinion. I found the opening scene of a man strangling a helpless woman almost to death very disturbing. I would suggest the author begin the book with something less violent. I did like the author's writing style. It is very descriptive and paints a vivid picture. I didn't notice any typos or grammatical mistakes. It appears to be professionally edited.

I had high hopes for this book as the sample for the initial book in the series had me really hooked and I wanted to buy and read the series. However, the start of the second book has really put me off. I guess I was looking for some more of the intrigue but just found that it was not enough to really grab me. I do not intend to buy and read the whole of this book. I did not see any spelling errors and it seems that it has been professionally edited and formatted. To be totally honest, I did not enjoy anything in the sample. I am also really put off by the title page as I feel it looks seedy, explicit and implies that the book is only about sex. I was really looking forward to reading this sample as the book yesterday convinced me that this author has huge talent with the writing style. I managed to get past the title page yesterday and the fact it is a romance novel, however today I just did not feel that the start was enough to grab me. I do not normally read romance, although I still think I am going to read the first book in this series.

A volunteer OnlineBookClub review drew my attention to these books; I might have sampled this because I'm going to read the book that precedes it in the series. I will read the rest of it on the basis of the first ten pages because I'm interested to read about the couple's process in recovering from their trauma. At first I thought the editing was better than in the first book, but I still noticed errors like "his taunt features" - so maybe this also hasn't been professionally edited. What I liked best was the acknowledgement of the difficulties of rape survivors and the theme of how they might deal going forward. The descriptions of the physical attractiveness of the characters could be approved - all that focus on eye colour seems old hat and cliched.

Even without the First Ten program, I will buy and read this book because everything in it, is captivating me - the cover, the title, the genre, the blurb, the first ten pages, and the high review ratings on Amazon. Reading the first ten pages did not disappoint me. It started in a quick pace, and a gripping read. Heartaches 2 by H.M. Irwing chronicles the abuse, betrayal, drug and the rape that bruised the past of Anna and Rafe. The fiction legend of the triumph of love over the distress. It is the sequel of yesterday's Book of the Day. There is no official OBC review of this book yet. I'm expecting the book 3 will be tomorrow's Book of the Day. I have not found any error in this professionally edited book. I have no improvement suggestion for this book. There is no Official OBC review of this book yet. I'll go with my original hunch - to buy and to read this book.

Again, I note that the cover uses the same image, which not only would make me believe at a glance that I've evaluated this book before, but it also hints that the book may be self-published and by extension, possibly not professionally edited. Granted, I don't actually know if that's true, but it's the impression I get from the repeated use of the same cover image. On closer look, the title clearly indicates that this book is sequel of one that I chose not to read. The plot description seemed to touch on some pretty heavy topics, which can go either way for me depending on how the author seems prepared to handle that kind of plot. Ten pages didn't seem like enough to provide a definite answer there, so I couldn't let the heaviness of those topics affect my decision. However, between the fact that it's a sequel and the author's habit of dwelling inside the characters' ruminating thoughts quite a bit, I did decide to let this book pass today.

If I had not read the sample I would not have read the book as I feel like it is a little explicit and mature for my taste. After reading the sample I have not changed my mind for the same reason. I did think that maybe this is just not my genre, as I typically do not read books that are this mature. I did not read an official review but that did not alter my decision. It was professionally edited. Another reason for not reading the entire book would be that I read the sample for the first book as also was not that intrigued.

The cover and title look like a romance novel. Not my normal genre. The reviews show it to also be about rape and emotional abuse. These are not topics I enjoyed reading about. If not for this program I would not have read further. Reading the first ten pages I see two people supporting each other. This is good. Both sound like they have been emotionally damaged. This is not good. The book sounds like it may be well written but it is just not my type of book. I did not see any editorial errors in the first ten pages. I have to assume that it was professionally edited.

I would not have sampled this book if it wasn't for the first ten programme. I do not like the book cover because it suggests sexually explicit content. Also, this is a sequel and having sampled the first book, I am certain that this involves mature content that is disagreeable to me. The work does seem to be professionally edited. Anna and Rafe, the protagonist are both victims of rape and are heavily dependent on each other for emotional stability. The plot seems interesting but once again I will not invest in an erotica novel nor would I recommend it to anyone.

Upon seeing the cover and title for "Heartaches 2", I knew that this is not a book I want to read, as I'm not into romance novels. There was no official review, but the Amazon synopsis was enough to confirm my initial thoughts. While the sample wasn't bad, it did have a handful of errors, and I honestly could not wait to be done reading it. The writing itself wasn't bad, and I have no suggestions for changes; it's just not for me. If I had to note something that I liked, I'd pick the fight between Rafe and Eric because it allowed me to briefly forget that I was reading a romance novel.

Since I haven't read the first part, I wouldn't have bought this book. I didn't read any reviews of it. I read the sample. The writing style was good, descriptive. I didn't see any grammatical mistakes. Because of my unfamiliarity with the story, I was missing out on the past of the characters introduced in the first chapter. I didn't understand much.

The cover of this book is a mirror image of the cover of the first book in the series. I wonder if this is a purposeful choice by the author or a lack of options? I cannot decide if it is highlighting a change of viewpoints or if it's just a coincidence. Either way, it is still fitting art for the book's contents so I think it is marketable. The sample of Heartaches 2 read much more professionally than the sample to Heartaches. There is flow and beautiful imagery presented with the word choice. Thankfully, I didn't catch any errors on the first ten here! It seems that Anna is still describing herself as "soft" and "comfy" in this book so I am again slightly perplexed by the non-doughy cover model who is presumably "Anna." She and Rafe are each still struggling with demons as we see Rafe wake from a nightmare right off the bat. One can easily assume the plot will surround their ever-building relationship. Not a romance lover, I will pass on this book, but it certainly seems more intense than the first.

This is a professionally designed cover page which is pleasing to the eye and continues with the theme of the previous book. As I didn't get interested in book one, I wasn't too excited about this one. Unfortunately, there was no OnlineBookClub review to give me more of an idea about the book. The pages which I read were well written and edited. The story continues with Anna and her heartaches which in this book seem to be tied to Rafe. Sadly, this story also failed to grab my attention, so I won't be continuing to read it. I have no ideas for improvement.

After reading a sample of, Heartaches 2 by H.M. Irwing, I have decided that I will not be purchasing this book. I will be putting this book on my to-be-read shelf. At first glance, I didn't think that I would be interested in this book. The first book didn't sound like it would appeal to me, but I may be going back and getting it. If I had not read a sample of this book, I would have picked it up. The blurb piqued my interest. The blurb gives the tone that all is not well between Rafe and Anna. As I read the story, I'm pulled in. Immediately I know that something is going on. My curiosity is piqued, as to what has happened. From the sound of it, Rafe and Anna are in a dangerous situation. I'm eager to read more and learn what will happen next. From what I have read this book does not appear to be professionally edited. In the sentence, "Her hands and legs trashed uselessly against him" thrashed is misspelled. This book does not have an official OnlineBookClub review. The lack of a review of this book does not lessen my interest. I look forward to purchasing and reading this book when I'm able.

This is exactly the type of book I would have chosen because the cover and title present the story as a passionate love story. There is no Official Online Book Club review, but after reading the blurb, editorial, and customer reviews my opinion began to change. The first book in this series was too graphic for my taste. The beginning of this book wasn’t as intense as the first book, but I will not buy and read the remainder of this book. My original opinion has changed. There is one grammatical error on page 2. I would suggest less graphic language to attract a feminine audience.

Based on the blurb, I wouldn't pick this book up. This is the second book and sequel to the book from yesterday and I was not interested in reading that book because of the graphic and disturbing scenes. After reading the first ten pages, I did notice some minor mechanical errors such as missing prepositions like "a" and present and past tenses mixed up, but they didn't overall distract from the reading. It is clear that one must read the first book in order to understand this book because Anna and Rafe are together and share history that was explored in the first book. I think fans of the first book would enjoy this. But this genre isn't for me.

From the cover and title of this book, I wasn't too excited about reading it. The sample was error free but because this is the second book in a series, I got a bit lost as I hadn't read the first book. I couldn't put the events of the story in context and for this reason, I won't be reading the rest of the book. I didn't see an official review of Heartaches 2. Since I committed to reading the first book, based on the cover and title, I would have sampled the second book after completing the first. I liked that the first few pages were filled with tension between Anna and Rafe, it made me want to know how did they get there in their relationship. I will be reading the rest of Heartaches 2, in the case that I enjoy reading the first book. I did not see any errors in the pages I read.

I would not have chosen to sample Heartaches 2 apart from First Ten. Like the first book in this series, the suggestive cover implies that I would not enjoy reading Heartaches 2. I'm not a fan of dark romance novels in the slightest. I also thought it was odd how the cover is practically that of Heartaches - I found that slightly confusing when I first recognized this book as BOTD. For some reason, the blurb made Heartaches 2 appear more intriguing than the first novel. Important topics like sexual assault are broached and I get the sense that this book is more than just attraction and passion. The first ten pages indicated that this book wasn't for me. I don't like romances where the love interests are heavily dependent on one another, so reading lines like, "He was my world," made me internally cringe. In addition, I'm assuming this book also has sexual content as the first did, so I will not be reading. This book seemed professionally edited and I didn't notice any grammatical errors.

This book is not actually free today as the first ten intro implies. The cover and title are good indicators of the genre of this book. It is not a genre I enjoy though, so I would not have sampled this book without the first ten pages program. I find the Amazon blurb to be too long and mostly a synopsis of the first book. It doesn’t give much info about this second book. The blurb and sample have a few misused words, such as “horn in” instead of “hone in”. The beginning of this book does a good job of summing up where things were left off in the last book. I still find the language a bit too dramatic for my taste. I did find the opening dream sequence a bit confusing at first and it took me a few moments to figure out what was real and what was dream. This seems like a decent second book in the series. It is not a genre I enjoy though, so I do not plan to read the rest of this book.

Similar to the first book's sample, I am not interested in this one. The prologue was intense, but I felt there was too little action and too much description, especially the incessant repeating of all the reasons Anna adores this Rafael guy so much. It's a little too much for me. I also found at least two editing errors in this sample, and there was a lot more profanity than in the first one, which turned me off. This all makes me even more sure than I was before that I don't want to read this book. Readers who liked the first book may want to give it a try, but I wouldn't personally recommend it to anyone.

Had I not actually sampled the first ten pages as part of this program, I would not have chosen to read or sample this book based on the cover, genre and book 1. I didn't like the writing of the sample for book 1.
I am not going to buy and read the whole book because of the previously-stated reasons. The writing in book 2 was worse. It was like the author did a thesaurus look-up on every other word.
Based on what I read, the book doesn't seem like it was professionally edited. I noticed typos or grammar errors such as in the first page with the sentence that has "heat wave".
What I like the most in the bit I read is none.
What could be improved is the writing and corrected typos.
The book does not have an Official OnlineBookClub review that I saw. The lack of an OnlineBookClub review didn't affect my decision.

Since I skipped Book 1 in the series, it's a no-brainer that I would equally have walked past Book 2 without the program. After reading the sample, I find myself unable to gel properly with the main characters, probably because I know little of them from the first part of the series. That notwithstanding, I felt the descriptions of Anna and Rafe were a bit too mushy for my taste. I liked the writing style and the intricately crafted web of words but didn't necessarily enjoy the message passed across. I spotted no grammatical errors and have no recommendations for improvement. I didn't see an OBC review but that didn't affect my decision to stop reading right where I did.

I would not have sampled this book without First Ten since I don't care for books with themes of rape and emotional abuse. The cover made me feel this would be a cheesy, erotic novel which turned me off. The Amazon summary appears to be edited well, but it gives too much of the story away. Although the sample pages are well written, the disturbing content was not my taste. I didn't see an OBC review of the book so I had no preconceived ideas about the story. Based on the themes, sample pages, and my personal preferences, I am not interested in reading further.

After reading the title and description and seeing the cover photo I was not interested in buying this book. The sample was quite painful to read because of the violent content and poor wording and editing. Unfortunately I didn’t find anything to like in this sample and will certainly not be reading the rest of the book. The sentence, “His long, muscular frame slicked with sweat that wasn’t at all to do with heat wave they had been experiencing the last couple of days.” is just one example of the poor writing quality.

H.M. Irwing's Heartaches 2 was a pleasant surprise. At first, I thought it would only bring more heartaches after reading the sample from Heartaches 1 which was much too dark and violent. Reading the sample from Heartches 2 made me change my mind. The author seems to be talented and he manages to describe pain in an almost poetic way. Maybe this is exactly the message the writer wants to transmit: people should put away their prejudices and be ready to understand abuse in all its complexity. Anna and Rafe's story may be such an example of the numerous implications abuse has on a person's future life and relationships. There are positive customer reviews on Amazon and the blurb is not bad either. Not much is known about the identity of the author, though. For me, the book still plunges too deep into the heart of darkness, but others may give it a try.

Like with the first book in the series, I love the cover art. However, I found the sample to be poorly edited. There were several grammar errors, and the dialogue between some of the characters flowed awkwardly at times. The author's repeated use of the character's full names made the story seem a little impersonal. Also, the author repeatedly told us in the first ten pages about the eye color of our two protagonists. I am not sure how that added value to the story.

I probably would have not read the sample of Heartaches 2 if it had not been a part of the First Ten program. The lack of a Book of the Day review made me not very interested in reading it. The book seemed like it was professionally edited. I enjoyed that the author was trying to shed light on the topic of abuse. However, the writing style made the plot feel slow. As a result, I will probably not read the rest of the book.

As with Heartaches, the synopsis and review both immediately deterred me from Heartaches 2. Given that this is a continuation of a story I originally chose not to read, I'm sure it is obvious I would pass on the sequel as well. In addition to my disinterest in the first installment due to the graphic rape scenes, the sample of Heartaches 2 further convinced me this is not the series for me. I was completely dissuaded from reading this book due to the contradictory descriptions of Anna and Rafe. They were constantly referred to as very strong then very weak and vulnerable. Their relationship with each other also seems quite unrealistic. They are so dependent on each other and Irwing continuously says how their love is all they have and can get them through anything. It was too redundant for my liking. I have to pass on this series. I could not find anything in this sample or the review that made me want to read it.

As I’m not into romance typically, I don’t think I would read the sample of this book without the first ten program. I don’t think this book was professionally edited as I found an error rather quickly, ‘due to heat wave they had been experiencing’ should have a ‘the’ in front of heat wave. There are also several pronoun errors in the next few pages, saying Rafe looks at him (meaning Anna). I did love the amount of detail the author puts into each description, not many authors can get so descriptive! This book didn’t have a review, but I don’t think that affects my view of the book. I won’t be reading the rest of this one, mostly because I’m just not into romance.

I would not have sampled this book without this program because the cover of the book gives the impression of being erotica. The first book of this series was in the program yesterday. I know already that the book discusses strong content, like rape and abuse. I am not interested in reading about that. After I read the sample pages, the book seemed edited. The first scene was too strong for my taste. I had to stop reading. I will not read this book because I do not want to read about rape and abuse.

As I didn't read the first book, I wouldn't have sampled this one. The cover is almost the same as the first book and just as cheesy. Neither the cover nor the blurb enticed me. The sample opened with an intense scene (a nightmare) and then slowed down. Ann's reflections and the fight scene were long-winded, and I found it hard to become absorbed in the story. Though this book seems to be better edited than the previous one, there were a few awkwardly worded sentences. I won't read the book, as it just doesn't appeal to me. I also understand that this book also contains some graphic scenes. Erotic romances aren't my thing, nor do I care to read about abuse. I didn’t see an official review, but it wouldn’t have swayed my opinion.

Total ~ 7%
Heat: earned a score of 7%.
In other words, out of the top-level reviewers who read at least the first 10 pages of this book, 7% plan to read the whole book.
IMPORTANT: Any score over 10% is considered very good. And any score above 0% is acceptable.
Over a million books are published each year. Any given person could not even read .0001% of the books out there. This means readers have to be very selective. Even taking the time to look over reviews and blurbs, let alone read samples, is more time than most readers can afford for most books. The First Ten is a powerful focus group that addresses those issues. It creates a helpful tool for authors, publishers, and other readers.
