Creativity is one of the most essential characteristics of reputable children's book. Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi embodies not only creativity, but the novel also demonstrates an engaging writing style to appeal to elementary age children. The illustrations by Jorje Valle are not only alluring but unique in their content and definitely appeal to the young audiences they are intended for. Both of these arts put together makes the characters of the story come alive visually and mentally for the young readers.

In the novel, the reader follows the daily happenings of a silly cat named Inca who teams up with her fellow animal friends to do detective work. The novel documents the adventures of Inca as she tries to become the most famous cat detective in history. Using her cat intellect, Inca solves mysteries and records them in her diary. The novel is an engaging read for young children, particularly those ages six through nine. The font choice, miscellaneous illustrations, and word count per page aligns with the developmental status for most children during these years of development. However, children who read at an advanced reading level may find this book to be tedious because of the lower level vocabulary. Diary of a Snoopy Cat would most certainly appeal to children whose reading level corresponds with the writing style of the book.

As a child development major, I found this book to be very pleasing. The best aspect of this book is the author’s obvious understanding of the thought processes of young children. Inca expresses stress over the actions of other household members throughout the novel and feels very deeply about seemingly minor conflicts. Inca's conflicts with the other characters in the story align closely with the social and emotional development of children ages six through nine.

The rating I am giving Diary of a Snoopy Cat is four out of four stars. Inca serves as a great character for children to relate to because of the emotional and social reactions of her character. All children go through numerous emotional challenges throughout the day as they navigate the world around them. Inca not only expresses her own emotional challenges, but she also presents different ways to cope with them. I do think the story could have used a few more personal challenges for Inca, but the conflicts that are presented in the book are very well developed and relatable for young readers.

For parents who are looking for a funny, quick read for their children, Diary of a Snoopy Cat is a wonderful choice. Adults will enjoy reading this book to their children as well because of the story's engaging plot development. Additionally, the book presents many useful stopping points to take breaks for discussion, which would be a great way to challenge a child's comprehension of the story. I love to see books that are stimulating for a child’s development. Diary of a Snoopy Cat is most definitely a relatable, fun, and engaging read for children, which is why the story deserves the highest literary rating possible.
