The book the Leading Man talks about the process of leadership. It discusses this important subject leadership in 6 sections which include developing a presence, having a vision, being able to communicate, being able to motivate, crediting, and having emotional intelligence. Each of this is discussed in further subsections, making the process of leadership and of being a leader simplified. In our time, when everyone has different definitions and idea about what leadership should be, Stephen J. Blakesley comes very close to it. Leadership is a process, you can’t learn leadership on the job, you have to be a leader before being put in a position of leadership. Blakesley reminds us once again, that leadership is not a position.
I like that the book is so apt, and concise. I really applaud his effort towards offering references to some other books for further reading in some of the points discussed. I appreciate his effort towards simplifying leadership, I haven’t come across a material or book that simplified leadership as the leading man did. I also liked that he gave some examples while discussing.
As much as I liked that the book is apt, I have to fault it. At some point its like you are going up a mountain, and suddenly you are at its foot or you never finished climbing. The anticipation is not satisfied in some of the chapters. The chapter "Amygdala hijacking", I didn’t quite get. I guess I would have to file it under one of the chapters where I never really got to the top of the mountain.
I would recommend this book to anyone seeking to be a leader. Furthermore, I recommend the leading man to any leader seeking to be a better one. Everyone who aspires to be a better person should read it too, as leadership is an essential part of humanity. At some point in our lives, I believe we all get to be leaders and we have to be prepared for it. The leading man is one of, if not the simplest material one will across that discusses leadership.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. One of the reasons is because of its simplicity. In addition, I give it a 3-star rating because it discusses leadership in a way that anyone reading the book can relate with. It would have been an excellent rating if he did not cut short, albeit unknowingly, some chapters. Whether it's really a fault, I am not so sure now, maybe I just wanted more.
