H M Irwing's Heartaches 2 - Bad Boy Vibes is interesting, memorable, entertaining and charming, a story that leaves you breathless. It starts with a prologue which highlights Rafe Brown’s nightmares brought on by his dark past. They are so powerful that they turn Rafe feral, and dangerous to those around him especially to Anna his girlfriend who he happens to strangle when in his nightmarish state. However, Anna is always there ready to protect, and soothe him. The story goes on to follow the fight arranged between Rafe, and Eric Dayton a fight to deal with the past once and for all and be free, a fight that worried Anna so much because of Eric Dayton’s deviousness. Rafe won the fight but that wasn’t the end of it, there was a lot to follow as Eric wanted to punish Rafe for his stubbornness. He retaliated using his meanest ways by teaming up his goons and beating Rafe to a pulp. Things take up an unexpected turn when Rafe finds out Peter Preston is his father, and worse he is going to marry his aunt Bella who turns out to be pregnant by him. Now Rafe and Anna must team up with Ned Slater who lost his brother in Syria due to Eric’s machinations and do everything in their power to stop the wedding and bring the Prestons and Eric Dayton to justice once and for all. In the meantime, Pat Cash also faces up to his parents about his sexuality and ends up winning the love of his life, Dan.

I liked that Rafe used his brain when Eric confronted him a second time even though he had his goons around who held and beat Rafe, this time around he was a better opponent against Eric Dayton. I also liked the billionaire striptease that Dan performed for Pat. It made the story more humorous and lively. The drama of one mischief hitting after another made the story so intricately woven I was hooked and couldn’t put down the book.

Aunt Bella’s marriage to Peter Preston comes as a shock to me. Imagine the worst parasite to mankind marrying the epitome of goodness and Bella is acting like she is possessed which of course is expected of her as she is in love. But after being a firsthand witness to Rafe’s troubles, I didn’t expect her to behave like a naïve little girl. She knows very well what Peter Preston did to Rafe’s mother. Although she thinks she has redeemed Peter Preston which I doubt would last long. I think it would take all the saints in heaven to erase Peter Preston's evil deeds. Rafe’s continued insecurity towards Pat is a spoiler bordering to irritation. He knows very well that Pat is best friends with Anna that he is gay and even more likely to be interested in him but he continues to berate Ann. This jealousy isn’t healthy for their relationship and is a turnoff. I understand his possessiveness given what they have been through but a person needs a best friend once in a while.

The book never ceases to amaze me when I find out that Matt Preston is also a victim of his father even though he doesn’t say anything about the torment he lives in. Peter coerced his sons into a life of crime. what kind of father does that to his own sons? Eh!!! Making your sons more damaged than imaginable. Just when you think you have had enough of Peter you find out that he even gloated to everyone after raping the woman his son loved. I liked the style of poetic justice Irwing uses when he compensates Matt’s character through exploring Anna’s supposed share of blame for the rape when Matt informs her that she didn’t even put up a fight the first time Jason raped her, thereby lessening the blame on Matt which gunners sympathy for him in the plot. The compassion and empathy that Anna feels for Matt after discovering how damaged and victimized by his own father is overwhelming and speaks volumes for her character. The theme of the book is love conquering all as Anna and Rafe’s relationship continues to take on challenges one after another.

I liked how the author displayed the entire plot of how the Prestons intoxicated Anna through a scent given to her by Matt all in the sense of preparing her for raping. Then Matt tries to shift the blame on to Anna for being susceptible to the rape which is downright annoying because why you would give someone you claim to Love a date rape drug beats my understanding of how Matt expected Anna to fight off being raped so as to prove that she loved him. If Matt loved Anna as he claimed, he would have protected and fought for her since he already knew what was happening but then again what can we expect from him when he intoxicated and took Anna unwilling the first time he loved her. However, I give him a sympathetic thumbs up for telling Anna all the details of their game plan to ruin her at least he felt remorseful. I think Anna’s character is weakened so much when the author depicts that she doesn’t even know how to defend herself against Matt’s accusation on her failed attempt to fight off Jason’s rape advance when all she had to do was explain her side of the events as they happened. I find this to my great dislike and am so pained at the realization that Anna is ashamed of her sexuality, that she feels guilty of being wild in sex.

I rate Heartaches 2 - Bad Boy Vibes 3 out of 4 because it wasn’t professionally edited otherwise it would have received a 4 for an intricately well-woven story. This book would appeal to lovers of romantic drama. If you are squeamish on explicit sexual scenes then this book is not for you.
