Heartaches is a book of romance written by H. M. Irwing. It was set in Australia, mainly in the city of Melbourne. The book has 16 chapters with a prologue.

The storyline was about the lives of two individuals, Anna and Rafe, who were domestically abused, battered and raped and were in emotional upheaval. Both shared almost the same life history. Having been loved and cared for at the earliest stages of their lives, both experienced abuse at the later, first in the hands of one of their parents, then by other people. In the case of Anna, she lived in constant fear at home and dealt with taunts and name callings in school. The only bright side to her darkened life was Matt, who latter turned out to be the devil himself that lured her out of her comfort zone, drugged and used her for lewd sexual escapades with his depraved family- his brother and father. It was at the point when Anna was close to self-destruction, she met Rafe who was out to help her. When the plans to get justice for Anna failed, Rafe resolved to save her. It turned out Rafe also needed to be saved from his own demons being a victim of rape himself. Both Anna and Rafe decided to fight their battles together and save each other from the evil lurking around them.

I am very impressed by the writer's style of writing and use of literary devices. Irwing's descriptions were artful and creative. The use of flashbacks brought beauty to the book and gave more insight.

I won't fail to point out my disappointment with the writer's manner of confusing names and periods of events. There were also notable grammatical errors.

As a result, I rate this novel 2 stars out of 4. The book is very erotic and with detailed sexual acts. The book suits people that love romance. It will also suit young people, especially the ladies because of its expository nature.
