Who Told You That You Were Naked, A Refreshing Reexamination of the Garden of Eden, by Bill Combs is a succinctly written, study on how sin came into the world and how mankind can be redeemed by God’s grace.

The author offers up the idea that it is not the act of disobeying God’s command but rather the ‘knowledge of good and evil’, introduced by the eating of the fruit, that is original sin. He further states that this knowledge of good and evil is a comparing of one’s self to others which causes the great discontent, greed, jealousy and pride of a sin. He rebukes the contention that sin is an act but rather a mindset.

Throughout the book he attempts to explain the effects of sin. The author goes into great detail to explain how Christ’s death on the cross, is the only possible payment for the original sin that occurred in the Garden of Eden. He invites the reader to follow his thinking though Christ’s days on earth and especially the hours leading up to His death. He touches on the lives of other great Biblical characters, such as Paul and Abraham, to emphasis and reinforce his position.

I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. Much of the books is easy reading, with supporting biblical passages and other references. It also does not appear to support any one religious denomination but rather, Christianity, as a whole. The book is formatted in a type of lesson study, with a message in each chapter followed by study questions. The questions invite the reader to research the Bible verses to find the answers and allows for a more expansive and deeper understanding of the material. The author also includes extensive endnotes to further support his position.

Though I found many of the concepts interesting and well proposed I found Bill Combs' written reenactment of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden juxtaposed to my personal view of a ‘lamb lays down with the lion’ environment that he later references in the work. I also found his personal testimonies of encounters with dark spirits off putting.

If you are interested in the origin of sin, what comprises it, and how salvation is possible; If you are not unnerverd by a work that requires thought and study; then Bill Combs offers an interesting view worth reading in Who Told You That You Were Naked, A Refreshing Reexamination of the Garden of Eden.
