William E Combs’ description in the introduction of this religious enlightenment creates a distinct image in the reader's mind. The introduction is written in the first person giving a unique view of the authors’ background as related to the book while explaining to readers what the book is all about, “light and life available to those who believe.” The introduction also gives a summary of what to expect from each chapter.
The book is about the re-examination of the Garden of Eden. How Adam and Eve were tempted to eat the forbidden fruit, what happened afterward when they realized they were naked, and what brought on their feelings of nakedness. It explores how sin came about; what to do to overcome sin and be delivered into the kingdom of heaven.
I like the discovery in the book that God still communicates with us; however, it’s hard to know because the word of the Lord is rarely a daily occurrence. The way the author explains certain aspects in the bible like Gods’ Peace is refreshing. He relates to Christ’s peace as a referee in a team sport simplifying the book making it remain in our hearts and minds. The book explains well how the knowledge of good and evil inherited from Adam and Eve makes us sinners, and that we can’t overcome sin on our own as it’s a powerful adversary, but rather to walk in the Way of the Lord. I find this quote very insightful and inspirational, “Don’t try to drive the darkness out – just turn on the Light.” The theme of this book is Adams' transgression that gave birth to sin – the knowledge of good and evil. I also like the way the author bridges the gap in the different theological translations of sin.
There is nothing not to like in the book though I can’t say I understand everything. Some of it just confuses me, even more, when I think I have understood. I have noticed that all religious books are a puzzle it’s as if they are designed to keep us second guessing the meaning of things or simply to believe fully without questioning Gods will as Paul appeals to us in the bible to “place our bodies without reservation, at the disposal of God as living sacrifices to do with as He wills.” basically because the natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The book teaches us that we have to rely on our knowledge of good and evil in order to walk in the light by considering ourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus, to move forward with our lives following Him through faith without the need or desire to test the correctness of our decisions this way, we walk in the light as He is in the light, and we have fellowship with one another.
Another thing I find confusing, and like less, is the use of the name Abram and Abraham; is it the same name or two different names? Because according to the context in which it is used, you would think it’s one and the same but at the same time get the feeling they are totally different names. This confusion made me not understand some passages in the book.
I rate this book 4 out of 4; due to its simplified nature of writing that enables even those to whom English is a second language to understand the Bible through the eyes of William Combs. It is a very interesting read, an eye opener, and a refreshed view of the Garden of Eden. William E Combs’ writing in Who Told You That You Were Naked does have the power to make a person reflect on themselves. The book is suitable for all persons that are searching for God.
