How many times have you undressed in the privacy of your own bedroom preparing to take a bath or go to sleep and the only other creature in the room was your cat or dog? Chances are you did not feel naked in its presence because you did not project into your pet any capacity to judge you. You instinctively knew it accepted you unconditionally, clothed or otherwise. If you are a parent, these circumstances might also extend to undressing in front of your infant child. Who told you that you were naked by William E. Combs is a religious memoir centered at man's transgression in the garden of Eden in the old testament and the redemption that was made available by the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ in the new testament.
Due to the evil happening in our world today; which is not subtle, Combs tries to take his readers on a mission to delve into the events through which sin and death entered the world and hoped they rediscover the glorious light and life available to all descendants of Adam as he did.
Genesis 3 verse 7 "Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked" I have often wondered why wasn't this new realization apparent to Eve earlier. William expounds that Eve was not probably apprehensive because her perception of Adam's body language convinced her he did not observe her nakedness.
William emphasized that the Bible is one of the three avenues the Lord uses to assist us in our walk him as it is the foundation for our knowledge of the relationship we have with God. Most importantly he aimed at reminding his readers how critical it was to let the text divulge its meaning with the help of the holy spirit rather than interpreting it in light of our particular biases; terming it exegesis and eisegesis respectively. He encourages all Christians to live according to the law of the spirit of life and walk in the light, to quit trying to overcome sin and believe there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus because the root of sin is our mental capacity to discern good and evil and therefore, we are incapable of overcoming this antagonist.
I did find a few errors mostly with misusing words, certainly not enough to withhold the applause this book deserved. It is well written and appears professionally edited. Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Who told you that you were naked is one read that illuminates a believer's path towards eternal life and I recommend it to all Christians. Everyone will find something that he or she can take to heart.
Personally, my spiritual life is sharpened as a vast part of the bible now checks and makes more meaning. The parts that very much internalized me was "sin crouching at the door" and praying with little faith. I really liked the way the author account for the events in the garden of Eden, his descriptions were vivid enough to be able to picture in your mind, the events that took place. Each chapter ends with insight questions and bible references to righty guide the reader. Thank you, William Combs, for sharing this gift.
