This is a review of the novel Twisted Threads by Kaylin McFarren. In this work, the protagonist is a Japanese assassin named Akira Hamada who boards a cruise ship in the hopes of solving a murder. She decides to integrate herself into the suspects’ family but unexpectedly finds herself falling in love. As a result, she must embark on a journey of conflicts as she uses her tight timeframe to complete her mission, which might demand ruthless force that could betray her innocent façade.

I am rating this novel 2 out of 4. The rating was not 1 star because I believe there are people who would really enjoy this book. The author carefully depicted the scenes and the characters in them and tried to portray realistic situations. Also, the main characters were likeable and relatable although they were basically rich people and assassins. Lastly, the author paid attention to how the erotic scenes were set up and depicted, as proven by how fluent and engrossing those scenes were.

There are several things, however, I did not like in Twisted Threads. For one, the writing/narration seems excessively wordy and even amateur at times due to McFarren’s overly poetic descriptions. Another strike against this book is that the romantic scenes leading up to the erotic scenes seem forced, although this can be easily forgiven after reading the erotic scenes. The third negative thing about the novel concerns the characters. In the opening chapters of the book, I had difficulty keeping track of all the characters, especially on the cruise ship, because they all seemed muddled together and not significantly differentiated.

There were also a few characters that did not seem to fit in the story, which detracted from the storytelling. To the same point, although many good novels are essentially the intertwining stories of several characters, I was thrown off by the author’s inclusion of a mystery woman because it was difficult to understand her motives and, therefore, her actions, especially as they related to the other characters. This prevented me from becoming immersed in the story at certain points. The final strike against the novel was incredulous plot developments. Although this did not happen often, I believe it should not have happened at all.

Twisted Threads is an erotic mystery novel, so those who enjoy love stories or just erotic literature might enjoy this novel; more so if those same people also enjoy mystery plots. It is not advised that children read this book due to its erotic depictions and about 9 F words.
