A Long Night of Chaos, a political thriller written by Paul Clark, firmly contains the elements of the genre. It is purely fictional but set in the 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The story revolves around an impending military upheaval, political dissent, and characters, including generals, politicians, and revolutionaries, all set against a backdrop of tension, fear, and uncertainty in a nation.

At the heart of the story is Ruslan Shanidza, the protagonist, a national athlete and hero, a runner, and a man with principles, self-discipline, and stamina. He utilizes these skills to engage in political intrigue. Ruslan finds himself in the middle of an imminent civil war between the ethnic factions in Russia and Ukraine. He faces life-threatening groups determined to begin the war. He belongs to the Ksords and is happily married to an Akhtarian, whom he assures his audiences that if he can agree with his wife on politics, so can the Akhtarians and Ksords find harmony on a larger scale.

Clark uses in-depth description, dialogue, and well-written scenes to develop Ruslan into a unique hero. The author does not confuse the idiosyncrasies of any of the characters. The best part of the book was his use of ethnicity and culture to develop the internal and external dialogue, making the plot more realistic. The negative side of the story was his use of flashbacks to tell it. Progress was slow at first before I became fully engaged in the narrative. The author handled it skillfully, although it didn’t initially impress me. By the middle of the novel, however, I was racing to finish it.

The book has been professionally edited, and I rate it 4 out of 5 stars. Although the story begins with a violent scene and mystery, the subsequent chapters are void of action and excitement. For me, the thrill did not come until the middle of the book. This is the reason for a 4-star rating. I recommend it to an adult audience due to the violence and minimal non-explicit sexual content. In all, I enjoyed reading it.
