Review of The Angel of Death Origins
[Following is a volunteer review of "The Angel of Death Origins" by Laurent Cousineau.]
The Angel of Death Origins: OCD, Bullying and Questioning Reality is a fiction book rooted in real-life experiences written by Laurent Cousineau. I would rate this book three out of five stars. The author, Laurent Cousineau, depicts the effects of bullying that led to living his life with OCD. While I feel this book brings to light a very important topic of mental illness, the writing style can be disjointed, and at times often hard to follow the intended message. The writer shifts between various elements: the description of years of bullying, the discussion of the simulation theory and written short plays. Because of these things, I was only able to rate it a three out of five stars. If the book had an easier-to-understand progression, I would have given it a higher rating. I do commend the author for excellent editing as I did not find any errors.
The book details the psychological toll that years of bullying Laurent endured from both classmates and teachers. Laurent also had to deal with a stressful home life, but the bullying over many years was the main cause of his PTSD and OCD. This book is so relevant in today’s turbulent times and gives others a glimpse into the reality of how bullying can lead to mental health issues. The bully does not often realize how much damage and hurt they cause their victims. The author also shares the theory of how bullies probably struggle with their own inner mental health concerns. Many people do not understand how complex OCD can be and the different types of OCD that exist. The author shares a very detailed experience of living with OCD and how it can truly affect a person's daily functioning. The author does promote seeking medical help and how it can be useful to help manage the symptoms of OCD. This book also discusses how Laurent focuses on his work in environmental climate change and how that work helped the author manage some of his mental illness. It gave Laurent something to focus on and celebrate as a success.
This book may be a trigger or sad for some who have experienced similar situations and trauma in their lives, but it is an important story to be told. The last couple of chapters focus on the political and scientific confirmation of the simulation experience and then end with the bullying court hearing. Overall, The Angel of Death Origins is an emotional read with a powerful message for today’s youth.
